Socialist Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) made outrageous claims, without evidence, about her tour of a U.S. Customs and Border Protection immigrant detention facility which prompted an immediate response from officials who strongly disputed her claims.
Ocasio-Cortez claimed without evidence that CBP officers told detained women to drink from the toilets if they were thirsty while Ocasio-Cortez stood there and witnessed it.
“Just left the 1st CBP facility. I see why CBP officers were being so physically &sexually threatening towards me,” Ocasio-Cortez tweeted. “Officers were keeping women in cells w/ no water & had told them to drink out of the toilets. This was them on their GOOD behavior in front of members of Congress.”
“Now I’ve seen the inside of these facilities. It’s not just the kids. It’s everyone. People drinking out of toilets, officers laughing in front of members Congress,” Ocasio-Cortez, offering no evidence. “I brought it up to their superiors. They said ‘officers are under stress & act out sometimes.’ No accountability.”
Ocasio-Cortez’s accusations received immediate push back from officials who were there and who spoke to border reporter Anna Giaritelli.
“Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., screamed at federal law enforcement agents “in a threatening manner” during a visit to a U.S. Border Patrol facility in El Paso, Texas, Monday afternoon and refused to tour the facility, according to two people who witnessed it,” Giaritelli tweeted. “13 other House Democrats as well as their aides were in the room. I’m told only Rep. Ocasio-Cortez reacted in this manner.”
“She comes out screaming at our agents, right at the beginning [of the tour] … Crying and screaming and yelling,” a witness told the Washington Examiner. “The agents, they wanted to respond, but they held back because she’s a congressional delegate. But when you have someone yelling at you in a threatening manner.”
“They were like, ‘Hey, you need to kinda step back,'” the witness said.
Daily Mail editor David Martosko later noted a photo from federal court that showed the inside of a detention cell and shows that the toilet is connected to a sink that says “potable water.”
Later Ocasio-Cortez claimed without evidence that she “was not safe from the officers in that facility.”
