New York City Mayor Eric Adams announced on Wednesday that the city is suing 30 New York counties over their refusal to house foreign nationals who’ve entered the United States.
The lawsuit claims that the counties are preventing New York City from responding to a statewide emergency. If it proves successful, the lawsuit could result in courts invalidating policies set in place by the counties.
“This lawsuit aims to put an end to this xenophobic bigotry and ensure our state acts as one as we work together to manage this humanitarian crisis fairly and humanely,” Adams said in an announcement. He also stated, “We have repeatedly sounded the alarm that our shelter system is at capacity and that we are out of space.”
“The City of New York is asking the court to declare all the executive orders null and void and to enjoin the counties from taking any steps to enforce them,” the statement concludes.
New York City has seen a surge in asylum seekers coming to the city, with over 74,000 asking for housing since last spring, according to the mayor’s statement. As of June 4, over “47,200 asylum seekers remained in shelter provided by the City of New York,” the statement also noted. The city even saw as many as 900 foreign nationals ask for housing in single days in May.
New York City recently announced that 50 places of worship will begin to shelter foreign nationals. Adams also suggested that private citizens may also need to house border crossers.

Chicago has also struggled to house those who’ve entered the city after crossing the border. The Chicago City Council recently approved a controversial measure to provide $51 million in funding for housing many of the 10,000 foreign nationals who’ve arrived since August 2022.
Meanwhile, the Biden administration recently announced that it’s planning on increasing the number of foreign nationals who can enter the U.S. through the CBP One App to almost 40,000 per month.
One recent poll from CBS News found that 63% of Americans disapprove of President Joe Biden’s handling of the southern border, with just 37% saying that they approve.
