On Wednesday, NASCAR announced a partnership with Carolinas LGBT+ Chamber of Commerce, “one of the largest LGBT Chambers within the region pushing for equitable change within the workplace and marketplace.” NASCAR will be the Chamber’s Diversity, Equity & Inclusion partner.

“NASCAR is excited to partner with the Carolinas LGBT+ Chamber of Commerce,” said Brandon Thompson, NASCAR’s vice president of diversity and inclusion. “With NASCAR offices and much of our industry based in the Carolinas, we look forward to working with CLGBTCC in support of its mission to foster equity, inclusion and economic prosperity for the LGBTQ community.”

Carolinas LGBT+ Chamber of Commerce’s mission is to “foster equity, inclusion and economic prosperity for the LGBTQ community through strategic policy, professional enrichment, ally partnerships and economic development.”

“NASCAR has a rich history in our region and continues to be one of the most popular sports in the nation,” said Tiffany Keaton, the vice chair of the Carolinas LGBT+ Chamber of Commerce. “The intentionality of their partnership will allow the Carolinas LGBT+ Chamber to leverage relationships and increase our work in the area of diversity, equity and inclusion. The distinct brand that NASCAR brings to the chamber validates their commitment to equality and non-discrimination both on and off the track. It is an honor to name the league our ‘DE&I Partner’ for 2022, and I look forward to developing this amazing relationship.”

The announcement comes one day after NASCAR announced that the sponsorship between driver Brandon Brown and the cryptocurrency coin LGBcoin had been rejected.

LGBcoin — named after the now-famous chant of “Let’s Go Brandon” — first announced their deal with Brown on December 30, with Brown announcing the partnership on Twitter.

Following the official announcement, NASCAR told Brandonbilt Motorsports that they needed to review the sponsorship at “at a higher level.”

“After the announcement went live on Thursday morning, NASCAR acknowledged to us late that afternoon that we had received approval but that they now needed to discuss this at a higher level,” Brown’s spokesman Maxwell Marcucci said.

Marcucci expressed disappointment with NASCAR for deciding against allowing the partnership.

“NASCAR did not speak with Brandonbilt Motorsports prior to making their decision to rescind the approval and multiple attempts to set up a conversation to address this matter went unacknowledged,” Marcucci said.

“The bottom line is that Brandonbilt Motorsports followed the standard process for sponsor and paint scheme approval and received approval from a NASCAR official empowered to make those decisions, and who makes those decisions on a regular basis. This official then confirmed and reiterated that we had received approval in a phone conversation after the announcement was made.”

“We are disappointed that NASCAR leadership has chosen to rescind approval of this sponsorship and feel they should have the confidence to own their decision to backtrack and not gaslight a team or a driver,” he continued.
