MS NOW pundits melted down Thursday over two Supreme Court rulings that expanded President Trump’s immigration powers, calling the decision to end Temporary Protected Status for hundreds of thousands of migrants “catastrophic.”
“I have not read the opinion. I have made it through the holding. This is the catastrophic outcome that we feared,” former U.S. Attorney Joyce Vance said. “This is the worst outcome.”

This morning, the Supreme Court’s conservative majority handed the Trump administration two major immigration victories, siding with the administration in a pair of closely watched cases involving asylum policy and deportation protections.
In a 6-3 ruling, the court held that the Trump administration can move forward with ending Temporary Protected Status for roughly 350,000 Haitian immigrants and 6,000 Syrians currently living in the United States. Writing for the majority, Justice Samuel Alito said that federal courts exceeded their authority by second-guessing the administration’s immigration determinations.
“This will be a very controversial ruling. This is a further indication that the Supreme Court is intent on consolidating power in the hands of the president, part of this larger unitary executive theory that this White House has pushed,” Vance said on the leftist outlet.
“It’s an appalling decision,” she continued. “You know, some decisions do not stand the test of time. This one, I suspect, will not stand the test of time.”
Other left-wing commentators argued the high court should’ve ruled against the administration over the president’s past comments.
“The court is ignoring the history of this administration’s remarks about Haitian people, in particular. I don’t think there is a single American who can say they actually forget what we heard from the President, what we heard from Vice President Vance about Haitian people, just some of the most disgusting and racist remarks you can imagine,” MS NOW anchor Antonia Hylton said.
The conservative majority ruled that respondents were unlikely to prove that race was a motivating factor in the decision to terminate Haiti’s TPS designation.
“None of the cited statements by either the President or the Secretary was overtly racial, and in substance all expressed policy views that could rest on race-neutral justifications,” Justice Alito wrote.
In another 6-3 ruling, the court upheld the federal government’s authority to turn away asylum seekers at ports of entry through a policy known as “metering,” rejecting arguments that federal law requires officials to process every migrant who arrives at the border seeking asylum.
The three liberal justices dissented in both cases, representing significant victories for President Donald Trump’s broader effort to tighten immigration enforcement and exert closer control over migration.
“We’re talking a matter of weeks, not months, not years,” MS NOW reporter Lisa Rubin said of when affected migrants could be deported.
In response to looming deportations, one MS NOW commentator encouraged other Western countries to step up.
“I also ask the world to step up to be the leaders that the United States used to be. Canada has a solution, Mexico may have a solution, and other countries may step up and say, ‘you know what, we’re going to stand in the gap that the United States used to stand for,'” Allen Orr, an immigration attorney, said.
At the same time, the Trump White House took a victory lap.
“Temporary means temporary,” Border Czar Tom Homan said. “The problem is, no administration has had the guts to follow that statute.”
