At least seven people were slaughtered and 34 wounded Friday when terrorists opened fire during a funeral service at a Greek Orthodox church in southern Jordan, authorities said.

The terrorists approached the church armed with pistols and a rifle, firing on mourners. Survivors of the attack reported hearing loud explosions before the shooting began. The slaughter lasted several minutes.

Reuters described the incident as “a rare attack on the country’s Christian minority.” It is unclear how many of the deceased were Christians.

“We were sitting praying in the church….They started shooting while we were ducking,” survivor Samer Halsa said.

Another video shows the terrorists firing at mourners as they flee inside the church for safety, leaving behind a person lying motionless on the ground. As the attack continues, one terrorist armed with a rifle steps over the person and fires at them.

He then approaches several other people lying on the ground, including one who had been moving, and fires at them.

A second terrorist then approaches other people lying on the ground and fires his pistol at them.

The worshipers called the police and Civil Defense after the attackers fled. Civil Defense took 45 minutes to arrive, according to Halsa.

The perpetrators remain at large, and a manhunt is underway.

King Abdullah II promised to strike those responsible with an “iron fist,” while Queen Rania described the attack as “heinous.”
