Mariupol Mayor Vadym Boychenko said on Monday that more than 10,000 civilians have died in the Ukrainian city since Russia’s invasion, according to a new report.

Boychenko told the Associated Press on Monday that the bodies continue to be counted throughout Mariupol and that the final count could exceed 20,000 deaths.

“Boychenko also said Russian forces have brought mobile crematoria to the city to dispose of the bodies and accused Russian forces of refusing to allow humanitarian convoys into the city in an attempt to disguise the carnage,” the AP reported.

In an interview with South Korean leaders on Monday, President Volodymyr Zelensky also said “tens of thousands” were dead in the city.

“Mariupol has been destroyed, there are tens of thousands of dead, but even despite this, the Russians are not stopping their offensive,” Zelensky said by video to the South Korean lawmakers.

The city had a population of approximately 400,000 people before Russia’s invasion.

Approximately 300 people died in a Russian airstrike on a theater in Mariupol that was being used as a bomb shelter, according to a report by the city’s government. The bombing occurred on March 16 despite large letters reportedly spelling out the word “children” on the ground outside, in Russian, so as to be visible from the air.

“[Lyudmyla Denisova], the Ukrainian Parliament’s human rights commissioner, said more than 1,300 people had been sheltering in the building,” according to the AP.

The information comes as President Joe Biden held a video meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday to discuss the nation’s stance against Russia.

“We have also emphasized the importance of the security of civilians in Ukraine and the unhindered supply of humanitarian assistance to them,” Modi said during the meeting, according to translators.

“We have sent medicines and other relief material to Ukraine and to its neighboring countries. And on Ukraine’s request, we will be sending them another consignment of medicines very soon,” he added.

The news also follows an unannounced visit over the weekend by British Prime Minister Boris Johnson to Kyiv, Ukraine. Johnson walked through the capital city’s streets with Zelensky and discussed what western nations could do to continue to provide aid. The Daily Wire reported:

Johnson’s arrival came just days after Ukrainian defense forces were able to push Russian occupation troops out of Kyiv and the surrounding areas.

The visiting British leader tweeted a video of the two walking through the empty capital city of Kyiv, surrounded by armed Ukrainian defense forces, along with the following caption: “The Ukrainians have the courage of a lion. President @ZelenskyyUa has given the roar of that lion. The UK stands unwaveringly with the people of Ukraine. Slava Ukraini.”
