San Francisco’s famous Fisherman’s Wharf was the site of a senseless murder of a young college athlete who was playing Pokemon GO this past Saturday night.

Calvin Riley, 20, and a group of friends were busy enjoying the augmented reality game that accesses a phone’s GPS and camera to allow players to search their surroundings for Pokemon creatures, when a gunman approached Riley, shot him in the back, and ran off. Paramedics arrived shortly after and administered CPR, but, tragically, Riley was pronounced dead at the scene.

KGO-TV reports:

A friend said Riley and a friend noticed someone suspicious watching them from the top of a hill that overlooks the park, but it was dark and they were looking down most of the time as they looked at their cellphones.

Riley died in what friends and family are calling a random attack. “From what we know there was no confrontation. There was nothing said back and forth. It was just senseless, just came up and shot in the back and ran away for nothing,” Family friend John Kirby said.

Kirby explained that Riley got little a ahead of his friend in his Pokemon search at the Aquatic Park and ventured around a corner. “Then when the friend came around a corner he heard a gunshot, saw his friend fall, and whoever did it ran away and possibly got into a car,” he said.

The gunman, who presumably targeted the Aquatic Park because of it’s Pokemon site status, did not take any of Riley’s possessions.

Riley, who was the closing freshman pitcher for the Delta College Mustangs in Stockton, had the talent and dreams of making it to the major leagues according to his cousin Gabriel Antonio Morales, who set up a GoFundMe page to help out with funeral costs.

“Due to this cruel world we live in, a part of my family was taken from us. When we got a call at 4:30 am saying he’s gone I thought I was having a bad dream. We’ve had too many laughs, too many memories, too many moments that I will cherish for the rest of my life,” Morales writes on Riley’s GoFundMe page. “This go fund me account is to help Cals parents put him to rest with respect, dignity, and honor that he deserves. Thank you in advance for all your donations we highly appreciate it.”

Authorities are still investigating and hopeful that witnesses will come forward who may have seen the act or have knowledge about the killer, who’s still at large.
