Malia Obama Attends Protest Of Dakota Access Pipeline

On Monday, Barack Obama’s 18-year-old daughter Malia decided to join activists at the Sundance Film Festival protesting the Dakota Access Pipeline.

Actress Shailene Woodley, who was arrested for criminal trespassing in Saint Anthony, North Dakota last October and is on the board of Our Revolution, crowed to Democracy Now:

It was amazing to see Malia . . . to witness a human being and a woman coming into her own outside of her family and outside of the attachments that this country has on her but someone who’s willing to participate in democracy because she chooses to, because she recognizes, regardless of her last name, that if she doesn’t participate in democracy, there will be no world for her future children.

Malia Obama is expected to attend Harvard University in fall of 2017; she is reportedly scheduled to work as an intern for film producer Harvey Weinstein in February. She already assisted crew members on the set of HBO’s Girls in the summer of 2015.

On Tuesday, President Trump revived construction on the Dakota Access Pipeline, which had been halted in December. The pipeline will run 1,172-miles transporting 400,000 barrels of crude oil per day from production regions in North Dakota through South Dakota and Iowa to end in Patoka, Ill.
