Legendary screen star Sophia Loren underwent emergency surgery on Sunday after a bad fall at her home in Switzerland and remains hospitalized.

A source confirmed to the Hollywood Reporter that the 89-year-old Italian star is recovering after having hip surgery. Loren sustained several fractures after falling in her bathroom, including one to her femur.

The source told the outlet that the family remains cautiously optimistic during her recovery. Her sons, Carlo and Edoardo, stay by her side at the hospital, the source added.

Loren’s agent, Andrea Giusti, told the Associated Press that the actress fell on Sunday, and the surgery was performed later that day. The operation “went very well and now we only need to wait,” Giusti added.

The hospitalization comes days after the Hollywood legend celebrated her 89th birthday on September 20.

Loren was last publicly spotted on September 2 when she attended Italian designer Giorgio Armani’s fashion show held during the 80th Venice Film Festival, the AP noted.

In 2020, Loren made headlines when news surfaced she would appear in son, USC graduate Edoardo Ponti’s film for Netflix’s “The Life Ahead.” It was the actress’ first time back on the big screen in almost a decade, at the time, IndieWire noted. The role landed her a David di Donatello Award for best actress.

In 1962, Loren won her first Oscar for her role in Vittorio De Sica’s neorealist wartime drama “Two Women.” She was again nominated in 1965 for her part in “Marriage Italian Style” alongside actor Marcello Mastroianni. The actress took home an Honorary Oscar in 1991 for her long career.
