Country singer LeAnn Rimes said she only realized recently that she “missed out on a lot of things” in her childhood after she became a star at such a young age.

The 40-year-old singer/actress said that despite being grateful after landing her first record deal at the age of 13, her young fame was both “a blessing and a curse,” The Guardian reported.

“I started performing at a very young age and I didn’t realize how unique my childhood was until I had my stepsons, and the eldest turned 11,” Rimes wrote for the outlet.

“I thought, ‘Oh wow. My experience of this stage of life was very different,’” she added. “I did get to be creative and live out a dream at a very young age, but I also missed out on a lot of things.”

“I had a unique, grownup voice, and there was an emotional way to how I performed, as if it came through me from somewhere or something else,” she added. “As if I was a conduit.”

“At the same time, there was a loneliness to having that gift,” Rimes continued. “I wouldn’t say I’ve had a lot of friends in my life, even if I have a solid group of people around me now. Throughout my childhood, and even in my 20s, friends were so hard to come by, and I wasn’t very trusting either.”

The “Coyote Ugly” star went on to talk about how she found that “being really good at something can make you feel isolated,” and admitted she “wasn’t really a kid.”

In 2012, Rimes checked herself into a rehab facility to deal with her depression and anxiety.

“When I turned 30 I went to rehab [for codependency and anxiety] after having a moment of realization: ‘I’m an adult and I need to take control of my life,’” the country star said. “‘I’m here for a purpose and I don’t want to be in a battle with myself.’ I was desperately wanting to feel freedom.”

“After that experience, I learned how to bring joy and play back into my days,” she added. “A lot of my life has been planned out — tours booked in advance, very little time off.”
