On Saturday, the Los Angeles Times published an opinion column titled: “They say Democrats are to blame for all California’s problems. But GOP is MIA.”

Knowing that California has been controlled by Democrats for decades, social media users on X blasted the outlet, with Republicans in The Golden State offering the harshest critique.

Jennifer Van Laar, an investigative journalist for RedState based in California, said Democrats “shut down [GOP] mics in the legislature and refuse to bring our bills out of committee.”

“We’re not MIA. We’ve been shut out of governing,” she added.

Kevin Dalton, a former candidate for Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors for District 1, provided a chart showing Democrats in the state have a supermajority in both the state Senate and Assembly. In the state Senate, Democrats hold 31 out of 40 seats, or 77.5% of Senate seats. In the Assembly, they hold 62 out of 80 seats, or 77.5%.

“The LA Times wants to know why only the Democratic supermajority that has had a strangle hold on California over the last two decades is taking the blame for the unmitigated disaster California has become over the last two decades,” Dalton wrote on X.

Dalton followed up his tweet with a video showing that since 1992, Democrats have held a trifecta (governorship, Senate, Assembly of state control 19 years while Republicans only once (in 1996) held more than one chamber (governor and Assembly). And since 2011, Democrats have had complete control of the state.

Denise Aguilar, the Republican candidate for California’s 13th Assembly District, replied: “Hmmm a super majority of democrats for 15 years … yes this disaster of a state is because of them. Literally no one else to blame”

Cole Patterson, data director for the California GOP, wrote, “Somehow, after 30 years of the legislature being dominated by one party, it’s actually the other party’s fault?

Another person wrote: “[The Babylon Bee] couldn’t come with a headline like this.”

Suggested community notes for the post are also brutal.

“As of the publication of this story, no Republicans hold any statewide offices in California and the Democrats hold a supermajority in the legislature,” one proposed note reads.

Another suggests added context: “The article concedes that Democrats ‘deserve to be on the hot seat,’ but argues that it’s the GOP’s fault that the Democrats ‘hold every statewide elective office and dominate the Legislature,’ because they’re not inclusive/pro-choice enough to be elected.”
