United States Senator and 2020 presidential contender Kamala Harris is now calling on Twitter to suspend a sitting president because she doesn’t like what he says on the platform.
Speaking with CNN’s Anderson Cooper on Monday, Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA) claimed President Trump is now using his Twitter account to bully people, citing his recent tweets about the “whistleblower” in the Ukraine “scandal” as evidence.
“The President’s tweets and his behaviors about this are just further evidence of the fact that he uses his power in a way that is designed to beat people down instead of lift people up,” Harris said.
On Monday, President Trump referred to the “whistleblower” as a “fraud” for pushing the narrative that he pressured Ukraine to dig up dirt on Vice President Joe Biden and Biden’s son, Hunter.
“The Fake Whistleblower complaint is not holding up. It is mostly about the call to the Ukrainian President which, in the name of transparency, I immediately released to Congress & the public. The Whistleblower knew almost nothing, its 2ND HAND description of the call is a fraud!” Trump tweeted.
Kamala Harris said tweets like the one on Monday and others sent over the course of his tenure as president show that he is irresponsible with his words and should be suspended from social media.
“Frankly, when you look at what he’s been tweeting today directed at the whistleblower, directed at so many people, you know, I, frankly, think that based on this and all we’ve seen him do before, including attacking members of Congress, that he, frankly, should be — his Twitter account should be suspended,” Harris told Anderson Cooper. “I think there is plenty of now evidence to suggest that he is irresponsible with his words in a way that could result in harm to other people. And so the privilege of using those words in that way should probably be taken from him.”
Anderson Cooper suggested that Twitter suspending Trump could potentially result in a backlash by giving off the appearance that the social media giant is silencing the president. Kamala Harris said Trump should be silenced because he is using “his words in a way that could subject someone to harm.”
“If he’s not going to exercise self-restraint, then, perhaps, there should be other mechanisms in place to make sure that his words do not, in fact, harm anyone,” she said. “And that’s my point. What we want to make sure is that his words do not actually result in harm to anyone.”
The senator’s demand for Twitter to suspend President Trump was met with criticism from none other than former “Saturday Night Live” cast member Rob Schneider, who said her words were un-American.
“Government officials asking corporations to sensor people is grossly unAmerican,” Schneider tweeted. “Free Speech is to protect not just the speech you like but also the speech you find abhorrent. @KamalaHarris you are either for ALL of it or NONE of it.”
Kamala Harris is not the only one who has called on Twitter to suspend Trump during this political firestorm. “Avengers” director Joss Whedon also said it should be done in the name of national security.
“Can I just add to this crucial thread that in the interests of national security he should be immediately banned from Twitter?” Whedon tweeted.
