A medical expert that spoke to The Daily Wire believes the Biden administration will eventually change the definition of “fully vaccinated” against COVID-19 to include a booster shot as it continues to push vaccines on the public.
Dr. Marty Makary, a surgeon and professor at Johns Hopkins University, said in an interview Wednesday that he fears that pharmaceutical companies are now “calling the shots” on President Joe Biden’s vaccine policy, pushing “anti-science” and potentially harmful vaccine guidelines.
“I think they’re going to do it. I think they’re going to change the definition” of fully vaccinated to include a booster shot, Makary told The Daily Wire. “Now, for a senior person, that may make sense [for] someone over 65 if you have not had COVID in the past. That is, people over 65, if they’ve not had COVID, I do recommend they get a third dose.”
“But for younger folks, there’s no evidence to support getting a booster dose,” Makary said.
The surgeon said that for middle-aged Americans who received the J&J one-shot vaccine, another dose is likely needed if someone has not yet had COVID-19 and gained natural immunity. For the young, however, “there’s absolutely no evidence” supporting getting a booster shot, Makary said.
“My fear is that pharma may be calling the shots right now, not the [Centers for Disease Control and Prevention],” Makary said. “They’ve not only convinced the CDC to make a vigorous recommendation for every 16 and 17-year-old to get boosted, but colleges are now drawing up plans to require a booster among students.”
“Nothing is more insane and anti-science than requiring young, low-risk, healthy students who had COVID already to get a booster shot, and there will be unintended harm from that indiscriminate booster recommendation,” he added.
Makary’s belief that the government will eventually push a more stringent definition of “fully vaccinated” was essentially confirmed by Dr. Anthony Fauci, the White House’s chief medical adviser, earlier this month. In an appearance on CNN, Fauci said “it’s going to be a matter of when, not if” the CDC changes its definition.
Some pharmaceutical executives are still pushing additional vaccinations in the wake of new variants of COVID-19. On December 8, Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla said that Americans may need a fourth COVID-19 shot, or a second booster shot, to protect themselves against the omicron variant of COVID-19.
“With omicron we need to wait and see because we have very little information. We may need [a fourth shot] faster,” Bourla said on CNBC.
Aside from vaccines, a number of treatments have proven to be generally successful at treating COVID-19. Monoclonal antibody treatment, which has gained emergency authorization from the FDA, reduces hospitalization and death from COVID-19 by 70% with almost no side effects, according to studies.
Regeneron, the maker of the treatment, has noted that the treatment is somewhat less effective against omicron, though evidence suggests that the variant itself carries a much more mild version of the disease.
