J.K. Rowling Slams New Transgender Bill She Says Will Hurt ‘The Most Vulnerable’ Women

J.K. Rowling slammed a new transgender bill that would lower the age at which a person can legally change their gender to from 18 to 16, a move she said will hurt “the most vulnerable” women in our society.

The First Minister of Scotland, Nicola Sturgeon, introduced a Gender Recognition Reform Bill that allows a trans person to legally change their gender and receive a new birth certificate with their gender on it through easier means than before, reported Variety in a piece published Tuesday.

“The law Nicola Sturgeon’s trying to pass in Scotland will harm the most vulnerable women in society: those seeking help after male violence/rape and incarcerated women,” the 56-year-old author of the “Harry Potter” franchise tweeted to her 13.9 million followers.

Rowling, who has often been the target of trans-rights activists because of her unwavering defense of biological women’s rights and protections, went on to note that the women who were already most at-risk would be further damaged if that bill were to pass.

“Statistics show that imprisoned women are already far more likely to have been previously abused,” she added.

Currently, a person over 18 can receive a gender recognition certificate after being “medically diagnosed as having gender dysphoria” and going “through a minimum two year process and be aged over 18,” reported The Times.

Rowling followed up her post noting that “multiple women’s groups have presented well-sourced evidence to Nicola Sturgeon’s government about the likely negative consequences of this legislation for women and girls, especially the most vulnerable.”

“All has been ignored,” she added. “If the legislation is passed and those consequences ensue as a result, the SNP government can’t pretend it wasn’t warned.”

The changes for the bill would include no longer having to provide medical evidence of gender dysphoria and lower the age to 16, the outlet noted. A person would also no longer have to go through the process for two years before applying to legally change their gender and instead would only live that way for three months, the outlet noted. After three months a person could apply for the gender certificate which would then be followed by an additional three months for what was called a “reflection period.”

Those who want to receive a gender recognition certificate would also have to “swear they intend to live as their gender for life,” reported Variety. This means if anyone falsely claimed to have changed their gender it would be considered a criminal offense and would carry up two years behind bars for that person, the outlet noted.

Rowling has previously responded to an article from The Times of London titled, “‘Absurdity’ of police logging rapists as women.”

““War is Peace. Freedom is Slavery. Ignorance is Strength. The Penised Individual Who Raped You Is a Woman,” she tweeted
