Two socialists who will likely win seats in Congress are throwing cold water on efforts to impeach President Donald Trump for a third time, warning that the move could hand Republicans a political talking point.
In a podcast episode with Politico, socialists Melat Kiros (D-CO) and Darializa Avila Chevalier (D-NY) cautioned that impeaching Trump could give Republicans campaign fodder and backfire politically.
“You know, I support accountability. My only question here is that is something that Trump himself seems to want, and so my question is: Is that actually going to be meaningful accountability for the Trump administration? And I think it means that we are going to have to think about what is actually going to hold their feet to the fire,” Chevalier told Politico’s Dasha Burns.
Chevalier, a Left-wing community organizer who pulled off a primary upset against establishment Democrats, appeared to suggest that another impeachment effort could play into Trump’s hands.
“I want to make sure that any accountability process that we do engage in is one that’s actually going to hold his feet to the fire, right? And so, you know, I’m open to impeaching. … I personally prefer if he were not president, right? But it is also, I think, a reality that we are having to navigate, and it’s important that we are actually strategic about what accountability looks like,” she added.
Instead, Chevalier said Congress should use its power of the purse and subpoena authority to try to end the Iran war and investigate corporations she accused of “profiting from his corruption.”
Kiros, meanwhile, said she agreed that Trump had committed impeachable offenses but did not specify which ones. She also said she wanted to hold those who helped elect Trump “accountable.”
“I think the voters are much more concerned about learning the kind of corruption that has a direct impact on their wallets, that has a direct impact on the way that the economy is growing in a way that is completely concentrated with the billionaires and the corporations,” Kiros said. “We have a real opportunity to demonstrate as Democrats that not only are we going to hold the Trump administration accountable, we’re going to hold all the cronies that helped get him elected accountable.”
Over the summer, socialist Kiros ousted longtime incumbent Rep. Diana DeGette (D-CO) in the Democratic primary for Colorado’s 1st Congressional District, extending the far-Left’s hot winning streak in Democratic primaries.
True to her campaign platform, the leftist says she wants to use her platform to help transform the Democratic Party.
“If we’re going to hold the Trump administration accountable, if we’re going to hold corporations accountable for how they’ve been operating with this administration, we have to be prepared to hold those corporations accountable for how they’ve operated with Democrats in the past as well,” Kiros said.
“And I think this is a real opportunity for us to hold ourselves accountable.”
