Vice President Kamala Harris made largely false claims about firearms during a CBS News interview on Wednesday following this week’s incident in Boulder, Colorado.
“I actually thought that Sandy Hook would have been the thing that moved Congress … when … babies were slaughtered,” Harris, who supports abortion, said, “And they did not act, and they did not act, it’s time for Congress to act and stop with the false choices. This is not about getting rid of the Second Amendment. It’s simply about saying we need reasonable gun safety laws.”
“There’s no reason why we have assault weapons on the streets of civil society. They are weapons of war,” Harris falsely claimed. “They are designed to kill a lot of people quickly. We all agree that we need background checks.”
“Let’s just be practical and agree, people who have been found to be a danger to themselves and others should not be able to purchase a gun,” Harris falsely suggested.
The AR-15, which is a semi-automatic rifle, is not technically a “weapon of war;” it is the civilian version of the primary rifle that the U.S. Military uses. The rifle that is used by the military has the ability to be fired in a fully automatic mode, which means the gun fires continuously when an individual pulls the trigger a single time and keeps the trigger engaged. Semi-automatic rifles are no different than handguns in the sense that one pull of the trigger equals one round fired.
Harris’ suggestion that people who “have been found to be a danger to themselves and others” are able to purchase firearms is misleading. Individuals with violent criminal backgrounds — including those convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence — are banned from possessing firearms. People who have “been adjudicated as a mental defective” or have “been committed to any mental institution” are also prohibited from possessing firearms.
Later in the interview, Harris stated, demanded that people “stop pushing the false choice, that this means everybody’s trying to come after your guns. That is not what we’re talking about.”
However, that is not exactly accurate. Biden has demanded that Congress ban “assault weapons,” which are nothing more than semi-automatic firearms. The Daily Wire reported:
There is seemingly little limit to what Biden wants to target when it comes to the Second Amendment, ranging from taxing gun owners, banning magazines “that can hold multiple bullets in them,” offering “no compromise” on the issue, and making other incoherent remarks like claiming that a “rational policy” on guns is making sure “you cannot have 20, 30, 40, 50 clips in a weapon.”
While on the campaign trail, Biden said that far-left gun control activist Beto O’Rourke was “going to be the one who leads this effort” for the Biden administration. O’Rourke has called for confiscating firearms from Americans.
Harris added that she did not think that Biden was “excluding” the possibility of using executive action.
