A security guard at a Tampa-area Citibank campus fatally shot a gunman who killed a woman Wednesday, stopping an attack that also left four other people injured, authorities said.
The four surviving victims were taken to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Frank Losat said during a Wednesday afternoon press conference.
The shooting unfolded around lunchtime at Sabal Park business campus in the Brandon area, just east of Tampa. Authorities received multiple 911 calls reporting gunfire at approximately 12:11 p.m. Deputies arrived one minute later, and the suspect was shot by a Citibank security guard at approximately 12:13 p.m., according to Losat.
Authorities said the suspect drove a sedan through a fenced-off section of the property, crossed several medians and a grassy area, and crashed into an outdoor seating area where employees were eating lunch. He then exited the vehicle carrying a rifle, approached a woman, and shot her.
The security guard confronted the gunman inside the building’s cafeteria, where the two exchanged gunfire. Losat praised the guard for stopping the attacker.
“Kudos to that security guard,” Losat said. He added that there was potential for further violence had the attacker not been stopped.
Authorities have not released the names of the suspect or the woman who was killed. Investigators are working to determine whether the two knew each other and have not yet publicly established a motive. Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister initially described the shooting as a “targeted incident,” though officials cautioned that the investigation remains in its early stages.
Citi said it was aware of the incident and was coordinating with law enforcement. About 3,200 employees were on the property at the time, according to Losat.
Adara Evans, a Citi analyst, told the Tampa Bay Times that she was eating lunch outside with coworkers when she heard a loud bang and saw the sedan crash through a fence and into tables. She immediately ran inside, fearing for her sister, who was working in a nearby building on the campus. The two have since reunited.
Cherron Martin, another employee, said she was attending a town hall gathering in the cafeteria when she heard a loud crash and saw the man emerge from his vehicle. After someone shouted that he had guns, she ran toward a parking garage.
Approximately 367 Hillsborough County sheriff’s deputies responded, alongside specialized units and federal agencies. Authorities conducted room-by-room searches and cleared all buildings on the campus after two and a half hours.

The active threat was declared over Wednesday afternoon, though investigators warned the public to avoid the area as they processed the scene and interviewed witnesses.
Investigators expected to conduct interviews well into the night as they worked to establish exactly what happened.
The nearby Hillsborough Community College Brandon campus was also placed on lockdown during the incident, but received an all-clear shortly afterward.
