GOP Bill Will Strip Largest Teachers Union Of Fed Charter: ‘It Has Spiraled Into A Partisan Machine’

WASHINGTON – Representative Mark Harris (R-NC) in the House and Senator Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) in the Senate plan to introduce legislation to strip the National Education Association (NEA) of its federal charter Wednesday after backlash over its leaked partisan and antisemitic resolutions.

In a press conference with other co-sponsors and supporters, Harris said, “The NEA was created to champion America’s teachers and serve our schools, but it has spiraled into a partisan machine that’s more about radical ideology than education.”

Announcing the bill alongside Harris were the measure’s cosponsors, Reps. Mary Miller (R-IL) and Ralph Norman (R-SC) and supporters Corey DeAngelis – a senior fellow at the American Culture Project and online advocate for school choice – and Tina Deschovich – a founder of Moms for Liberty.

The legislation aims at stripping the NEA of its federal charter, which is an outline of its mission and activities at the time of its founding in 1906. Representative Harris argued that the new bill is necessary because the NEA breached its original charter.

Harris cited Corey DeAngelis, who revealed that the NEA adopted many liberal resolutions in their annual meeting at the start of July. This includes supporting students organizing “against ICE raids and deportations” and continuing to “advocate for LGBTQ+ students” following the recent Supreme Court ruling against LGBT propaganda in classrooms.

The NEA also passed a resolution “to defend against Trump’s embrace of fascism by using the term facism [sic] in NEA materials to correctly characterize Donald Trump’s program and actions.” In the resolution itself, the teachers’ union misspelled fascism.

DeAngelis also reported that the NEA planned to “not use, endorse, or publicize any materials from the Anti-Defamation League (ADL),” an organization founded on stopping “the defamation of the Jewish people.”

On top of alleged antisemitism and calling President Trump’s actions fascist, the NEA is also under fire for their political donations to the Democratic party.

Harris noted that the NEA spent nearly $2 million on political donations to Democratic candidates during the 2024 election cycle, as reported by The Daily Caller. 

“98% of their political contributions every single election cycle are funneled to their buddies and Democrat campaign coffers,” DeAngelis said at the press conference. “It’s a money laundering operation. It should be illegal.”

The Free Press also reported that a NEA delegate retorted to a member asking about the best ways to teach reading and writing that “We (the NEA) don’t have time for that. We’ve got to fight Trump.”

Harris said, “The NEA has morphed into a mouthpiece for left wing extremism. They call themselves the teachers union, but their true mission is clear, indoctrinating our children with toxic propaganda.”

In a statement to the Daily Wire, Harris said, “The messaging that [the NEA needs] to do is get back to teaching students …  reading, writing and arithmetic, not brainwashing. … That’s wrong, and so we’re just calling that out.”

The Daily Wire reached out to the NEA for comment but received no response as of the time of publication.
