David Frum argued Wednesday in The Atlantic – a left-wing periodical where he is a senior editor – that Republicans should vote for Hillary Clinton in order to block Donald Trump from securing the presidency.
Entitled “The Conservative Case for Voting for Clinton,” Frum essentially argues that concerns over Clinton’s corruption and leftism pale in comparison to the sins he places at Trump’s feet; including bribing politicians for political favors, regularly defaulting on debts and contracts in order to defraud business partners, cheating illegal alien laborers of their wages, boasting of “sexual assault,” promotion of “religious bigotry,” and an ongoing refusal to disclose tax returns lest they reveal financial conflicts of interest involving to “Vladimir Putin’s inner circle.”
Trump amounts to “the most anti-constitutional personality ever” to become the nominee of a major party, added Frum.
Clinton, on the other hand, is described as a “patriot.”
“But [Hillary Clinton] is a patriot. She will uphold the sovereignty and independence of the United States. She will defend allies. She will execute the laws with reasonable impartiality. She may bend some rules for her own and her supporters’ advantage. She will not outright defy legality altogether. Above all, she can govern herself; the first indispensable qualification for governing others.”
Frum also makes a point to deny left-wing Democrat dominance of the news media as a real phenomenon, implying that supposedly heavy network television coverage of Clinton’s “email misjudgment” is somehow incompatible with the existence of what Andrew Breitbart described as the “Democrat Media Complex.”
“I’m invited to recoil from supposedly fawning media (media, in fact, which have devoted more minutes of network television airtime to Clinton’s email misjudgment than to all policy topics combined), and instead empower a bizarre new online coalition of antisemites, misogyists, cranks, and conspiracists with allegedly ominous connections to Russian state spy agencies?”
A vote for Trump in order to block Clinton, continued Frum, amounts to amputating one’s leg because of a sliver in one’s toe, or “cutting one’s throat to lower one’s blood pressure.”
Voting for Clinton, concludes Frum, is a vote to protect The Constitution.
“Your hand may hesitate to put a mark beside the name, Hillary Clinton,” advises Frum. “You’re not doing it for her. The vote you cast is for the republic and the Constitution.”
Frum is regularly bandied around the left-wing news media circuit as a compliant Republican who apologizes for the imagined transgressions of the GOP base as described by left-wing Democrats. He is often described by left-wing media as a conservative.
Last week, Frum joined left-wing MSNBC to warn of “recriminations for Trump supporters” following what he implied would be the inevitable election of Clinton to the presidency.
