Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA) declared today that Israel should have “absolutely” targeted and “taken out” Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, as the conflict between the two nations goes into its 5th day.

“Yeah, 100 percent,” Fetterman replied when asked in a Fox News interview if Israel should have targeted Iran’s Supreme Leader. “Yeah, I think they should have targeted him. Absolutely gone and taken him out,” the Pennsylvania Democrat told “America’s Newsroom.”

The conflict erupted last week after Israel launched a flurry of strikes on Tehran, targeting Iran’s nuclear facilities and missile sites and killing several top officials and scientists. Iran has responded with airstrikes of its own as tensions in the region continue to escalate, per The Hill.

“The way Israel operates, they just take out the leadership, just like they did with Hezbollah. And they’ve already done that with the Iranian leadership,” Fetterman continued. “That’s magnificent … I don’t know why they would have left the leader out.”

Fetterman has consistently backed Israel throughout its war with Hamas in Gaza and its conflict with Iran, posting Thursday on X: “Our commitment to Israel must be absolute and I fully support this attack.”

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu hasn’t ruled out targeting Khamenei, saying in a Tuesday interview, “We are doing what we need to do,” and Israel’s operation “could certainly” lead to regime change.

President Trump echoed similar sentiments on Truth Social, stating: “We know exactly where the so-called ‘Supreme Leader’ is hiding. He is an easy target, but is safe there — We are not going to take him out (kill!), at least not for now.”

While President Trump indicated that Khamenei was not an immediate target, he has signaled that the administration is pursuing a more comprehensive solution to the conflict rather than a temporary halt in hostilities. However, Trump also declined to rule out potential U.S. military involvement.

“We’re not involved in it. It’s possible we could get involved. But we are not at this moment involved,” Trump told ABC News.

On Tuesday, Trump noted the administration was looking for something “better than a ceasefire.”

The conflict between Israel and Iran represents the most direct confrontation between the two longtime adversaries in decades, occurring as Iran continues advancing its nuclear program through uranium enrichment at levels violating their non-proliferation obligations by the International Atomic Energy Agency.

The Islamic Republic has long called for Israel’s destruction and has funded proxy groups across the Middle East that have attacked Israel and U.S. interests in the region.
