Federal prosecutors will file charges against Enrique Marquez, friend and neighbor of the Islamic terrorists who murdered 14 and injured 21 in San Bernardino. A convert to Islam, Marquez is suspected of having assisted Syed Farok and Tashfeen Malik in their mass murder operation for earlier this month.
Marquez purchased the two firearms used by the couple in their attack, as Farook feared he could not pass a background check.
Confessing to investigators that he had been planning an attack with Farook in 2010 and 2012, Marquez said the two gave up on the plot after arrests in California of Islamic terrorists planning to murder Americans in Afghanistan .
Hours after the attack, Marquez posted the following message to his Facebook profile: “I’m. Very sorry guys. It was a pleasure.” he then checked himself into a mental hospital.
Federal investigators say Marquez has waived his Miranda rights, and is being cooperative with the investigation.
Converting to Islam several years ago, Marquez married a member of Farook’s extended family. A Russian emigre, Mariya Chernykhhe’s sister is married to Farook’s older brother. It appears that the marriage was insincere, a formality to obtain permanent residency for Chernykhe. Friends and neighbors did not observe the two interacting meaningfully with one another.
“He would never leave with her, come with her, not hug her,” said neighbor Brittani Adams. “The whole thing is very, very weird.”
Prior to the attack, Marquez was licensed as a security guard in California and worked in this capacity for Walmart.
President Barack Obama plans to privately meet with families of the victims in San Bernardino on Friday.
