Comedian Chris Rock said that “everybody is trying to be a f***ing victim” during a show at the Fox Theatre in Atlanta, mere hours after disgraced Hollywood star Will Smith posted a video on Friday, apologizing for his slap of Rock at the Oscars back in March.
Smith shockingly slapped Rock after the comedian cracked a joke about the shaved head of actress Jada Pinkett Smith, Smith’s wife. The “King Richard” star yelled “keep my wife’s name outta your f***ing mouth,” at Rock, who appeared stunned.
“Everybody is trying to be a f***ing victim,” Rock said on Friday, People magazine reported. “If everybody claims to be a victim, then nobody will hear the real victims.”
“Even me getting smacked by Suge Smith,” the comedian joked. “I went to work the next day, I got kids.”
“Suge Smith” is likely a play on the name Suge Knight, the currently incarcerated Death Row Records CEO, HuffPo noted.
“Anyone who says words hurt has never been punched in the face,” Rock joked.
In Smith’s video posted Friday, the actor addressed questions he said he received online.
“Why didn’t you apologize to Chris in your acceptance speech?” Smith read on one question.
“I was fogged out by that point,” the 53-year-old responded, The Daily Wire reported. “It’s all fuzzy. I’ve reached out to Chris and the message that came back is that he’s not ready to talk and when he is, he will reach out.”
“I just didn’t realize, and you know, I wasn’t thinking about how many people got hurt in that moment,” Smith said later in the video. “So, I want to apologize to Chris’s mother. I want to apologize to Chris’s family, specifically [Chris Rock’s younger brother] Tony Rock. You know, we had a great relationship. You know, Tony Rock was my man. And this is probably irreparable.”
“I spent the last three months replaying and understanding the nuances and the complexities of what happened in that moment, and I’m not going to try to unpack all of that right now,” the actor added. “But I can say to all of you now there is no part of me that thinks that was the right way to behave in that moment.”
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in April issued a 10-year ban on Smith, preventing the actor from attending the annual awards show in person, The Daily Wire reported.
