Disney+ definitely got everyone’s attention Tuesday when it dropped a trailer for a new series called “Ms. Marvel” that will include the first Muslim superhero.

In the nearly two minute long clip, fans got a look at the high schooler Kamala Khan, aka Ms. Marvel, being played by actress Iman Vellani, reported The Daily Beast. In the trailer, we didn’t get to see any bad guys the young superhero might be faced with fighting, and the only villains we saw were other teenagers at her high school.

The clip opens with her daydreaming about being Captain Marvel before she winds up in the high school administration office, possibly talking to a principal or counselor.

Later, she’s wearing a T-shirt with the several female superhero characters, Carole Danvers, aka Captain Marvel (played by Brie Larson), The Wasp (played by Evangeline Lilly), and Valkyrie (played by Tessa Thompson). She is then stopped in the hallway by one girl who mispronounced her name and makes what sounded like a less than flattering comment about her outfit, “Another Avengers shirt, cute.”

She is described by one person as being a “weirdo” as she dreams about boys.

“Maybe they’re right,” Kamala’s character said in the trailer. “I spend too much time in fantasy land. It’s not really the brown girls from Jersey City who save the world.”

It is then that some kind of electricity surge happens, and we see her putting on bracelets and donning a costume. A message on the screen reads, “This June the future is in her hands.”

It is unclear from the trailer how she gets the powers or what she can exactly do with them, but it’s obvious she can do quite a few things. At one point she closes the door from across the room. In another shot, there’s some kind of huge explosion in a building, but it’s unclear if she caused it.

There’s also a scene showing Muslims kneeling and doing daily prayers as the character is Pakistani American, reported Variety.

“Ms. Marvel” first appeared in the Marvel world in 2013 from writer G. Willow Wilson, reported The Daily Beast.

Wilson said she set up parameters for her high school superhero once the character really took off, which included no drinking and no sex, reported the outlet in 2018.

“I think Sana [Amanat] and I, when it became clear that this character was really going places and it was planned that she was going to show up in other books in the Marvel Universe, we kind of laid some ground rules, like, ‘OK, here are the things that Kamala cannot do,'” the writer explained. “(Laughs) You know, she cannot drink alcohol.”

“She’s not going to have sex,” she added. “Not in your book, anyway! I think in order not to dilute the purpose and the grounding and the foundation of that character, we did set some parameters.”

The Disney+ original series debuts June 8 on the streaming site.
