Congressional Democrats called for impeachment, invoking the 25th Amendment, and accused President Donald Trump of threatening genocide before and after the White House agreed to a two-week ceasefire with the Islamic Republic of Iran.

&#8220;This will be a double sided CEASEFIRE,&#8221; <a href="https://truthsocial.com/@realDonaldTrump/posts/116365796713313030">Trump posted on Truth Social.</a> &#8220;The reason for doing so is that we have already met and exceeded all Military objectives, and are very far along with a definitive Agreement concerning Longterm PEACE with Iran, and PEACE in the Middle East.&#8221;
Announced hours before his 8 p.m. Tuesday deadline, the ceasefire followed a morning threat that &#8220;a whole civilization will die&#8221; without an agreement, drawing outrage from Democrats who questioned the president&#8217;s mental fitness and urged the U.S. military to ignore unlawful orders.
&#8220;This is a threat of genocide and merits removal from office. The President’s mental faculties are collapsing and cannot be trusted,&#8221; Congresswoman Alexandria-Ocasio Cortez (D-NY) said.

News of the ceasefire &#8220;changes nothing,&#8221; AOC later said, arguing the president launched a war without congressional authorization and is leveraging the threat of genocide.
&#8220;Whether by his Cabinet or Congress, the President must be removed from office. We are playing with the brink,&#8221; she said.
Rep. Melania Stansbury (D-NM) urged administration officials to invoke the 25th Amendment, which would allow the vice president and a majority of the Cabinet to declare the president unfit to serve.

More than 85 House Democrats have called for President Trump&#8217;s removal from office, <a href="https://www.axios.com/2026/04/08/trump-impeachment-25th-amendment-iran-democrats">according to Axios.</a>
Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) accused Trump of &#8220;threatening mass death if he doesn&#8217;t get his way.&#8221; She urged Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) to reconvene the chamber.
&#8220;Congress needs to pull the emergency brake now,&#8221; she said in a social media video. &#8220;Every Republican who votes to let this war continue bears a portion of the responsibility for what is happening in Trump&#8217;s war.&#8221;
