Richard Keenan, the former Democratic mayor of the small northeastern Ohio town of Hubbard has confessed to raping a four-year-old girl over a two-year period. His confession was followed by a sickening explanation for his heinous crimes. She was a “willing participant,” said Keenan.
The 65-year-old pedophile allegedly began abusing children in 2013, two years after he left his office as mayor of Hubbard. Keenan was sworn in as mayor in 2010 and served for only year. Previously, he held a position on the town’s city council.
After two years of abusing children, Keenan confessed his crimes to family and clergy about the assaults, according to court records filed Monday.
Court records reveal that Keenan explicitly told his wife “I did it” when she confronted him after the child victim revealed what had happened.
Keenan then told his pastor that the abuse began when the four-year-old walked in him in the bathroom.
The confessions were soon followed by hospitalization at a psychiatric ward in Warren, Ohio. “He said during group discussions there that he had been sexually abusing a child for two years, according to court records,” reports The Washington Post. “He was released from the hospital and admitted to the River Bend Treatment Center, where he told an intake social worker that he was feeling suicidal because of his actions and that the girl willingly participated in the sex acts, according to court records.”
A self-described man of faith who once claimed he had dedicated his life to Christ, Keenan was criminally indicted last month and charged with eight counts of rape, eight counts of gross sexual imposition, and four counts of attempted rape. Disgusted by his betrayal of humanity, Keenan’s wife is expected to testify against him in trial.
If convicted, he could spend the rest of his life behind bars.
