“Days of Thunder” star Randy Quaid is not pleased to hear that Anne Hathaway will be starring in the sequel.
“We need Nicole [Kidman] back,” the actor wrote in a rant posted to X over the weekend. “Don’t be a p***y, [Tom Cruise]. You need the original girl. It’s not personal; it’s filmmaking. Anne isn’t sexy, because and if you haven’t noticed, she’s pregnant.”
He added in a follow-up post, “Anne Hathaway is a leftist, woke, horrible choice for ‘DAYS OF THUNDER’ NASCAR audience who are MAGA. The sexy older chick for Tom in this film needs to be Nicole. That’s the casting that would sell the idea. It’s interesting because when we made the first one there was also a rush to get it out; editors slept in the cutting room on shifts. This is a weird thing, like they want it to come out and tank.”
Quaid starred in the original 1990 sports action drama as racing team owner Tim Daland, who recruits rookie race car driver Cole Trickle (Cruise). Kidman played Dr. Claire Lewicki, Cole’s love interest, in the original.
Cruise posted on social media last week that the film was slated to hit theaters in summer 2028. “I’m gonna have this baby, then we’re going to make this movie,” Hathaway says in the quick clip of her and Cruise posing with a race car emblazoned with the movie title.
Cruise and Kidman wed in December 1990 after meeting on the set of the original movie. They were married for the next decade and adopted two children before divorcing in 2001.
The actor is a pro at refreshing his old projects. Despite a 36-year gap between the first “Top Gun” (1986) and the sequel, it became an absolute box office smash and the most lucrative film of Cruise’s career.
“Maverick” earned a whopping $1.49 billion at the global box office. It earned six Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, and won Best Sound. It was also named the Best Film of 2022 by the movie review site Rotten Tomatoes. “Maverick” was rated 96% certified fresh from critics out of nearly 500 reviews and achieved a near-perfect 99% fresh audience score.
No doubt Cruise is hoping to capture some of that sequel magic with the new installment of “Days of Thunder.”
