A concealed carry holder stopped a gunman on Saturday in Florida who opened fire on a back-to-school event where dozens of children were present.
Law enforcement officials say that the shooting happened at Isaac Campbell Park around 5 p.m. when a man “returned to the park after a fistfight and began firing,” WFTV reported.
Once the gunman opened fire, an armed citizen, who was legally carrying, shot him. The gunman was reportedly taken to a nearby hospital after sustaining life-threatening injuries.
“We are extremely grateful that nobody else was injured in this incident,” Deputy Chief Todd Hutchinson said. “This suspect opened fire at a crowded public park, this could have been so much worse.”
Florida Today reports that over 100 people attended the “Peace in the City” event which included dozens of children.
WFTV notes that the authorities do not expect to file any charges against the concealed carry holder since he was legally allowed to carry and possess a firearm.
Video of the incident shows people running as approximately 12 shots were fired.
