Comedy Today: Bash Trump And His Family In Offensive, Profane Rants, Make $$$!

“There’s no such thing as bad publicity.” — P.T. Barnum.

There’s a new paradigm for struggling and unfunny comedians out there: Make some really crude, even disgustingly profane, comments about President Trump — or even his family — and make bank.

Think about the nobodies who have risen to the top of the comedy world of late, such incredibly mundane “comedians” as Jimmy Kimmel, Stephen Colbert, James Corden, Jimmy Fallon, and their lesser brethren, Seth Myers and Chelsea Handler. Since the moment Trump entered the presidential race, they’ve ripped him and his family — including 12-year-old Barron Trump — and watched as their ratings (and paychecks) rose.

But it’s really been the lesser known and mostly untalented comedians that see a way to make a lot of money — bashing Trump is big business.

Take Kathy Griffin, who hasn’t done anything funny in decades (she was once pretty good). For some reason unrelated to her fulltime gig, she put out pictures of herself holding a mock severed head of the president, dripping blood. She apologized and disappeared, but she’s come roaring back to unapologize and then go right back on the highly offensive offensive.

Suddenly, she’s booked for tons of gigs, her website says. She’s got 10 shows lined up this month alone. Ka-ching!

But mostly unknowns are making bank, too. There’s Michelle Wolf, a contributor to the little-watched “The Daily Show” on Comedy Central. Wolf went on a misogynist rant at the White House Correspondents’ Association (WHCA) dinner in April, spitting out some vile and repugnant jokes about Trump spokesman Sarah Sanders.

“What’s Uncle Tom but for white women who disappoint other white women?” Wolf said as she also mocked the mother of two for her makeup and her weight.

Repercussions? Nope. Wolf now has her own show on “Netflix,” and her name is finally out there (she toiled in the shadows for years, mainly because people don’t find her very funny). But after targeting Trump and his family, she’s blowing up. Wolf even has her own HBO special coming up in December, ironically titled “Nice Lady.”

Now comes Samantha Bee, another not-so-funny comedian formerly of “The Daily Show.” Host of her own political show “Full Frontal” on TBS, Bee’s ratings in her third season have become anemic.

“Year-to-date, Bee’s Nielsen ratings are down 34 percent among adults ages 18-49, which is the demographic most-coveted by primetime advertisers. Isolating just millennials, a label assigned to adults ages 18-34, she’s shed a whopping 47 percent — or nearly half — of her 2017 viewership,” reports The Wrap.

So, time to launch a disgusting rant — not about Trump, mind you, but about his daughter. On Wednesday’s show, Bee called Ivanka Trump a “feckless “c**t.” She apologized, but didn’t really mean it.

The next day, she won an award from the Television Academy. In her acceptance speech, Bee said this: “Every week I strive to show the world as I see it, unfiltered. Sometimes I should probably have a filter. I accept that. I take it seriously when I get it right and I do take responsibility when I get it wrong … we spent the day wrestling with the repercussions of one bad word, when we all should have spent the day incensed that as a nation we are wrenching children from their parents and treating people legally seeking asylum as criminals.”

So, sorry/not sorry.

But you watch: Her ratings will rise as Trump-haters who never heard of her will suddenly tune in. Her name has been everywhere for several days and such vaunted news organizations have written glowing stories about her, like this one headline: “Samantha Bee’s message was right even if her word wasn’t.”

Yup, in the world today — as in the circus master’s time — there really is no such thing as bad publicity.
