Cher, who is well known for her left-wing political beliefs, broke ranks with her fellow entertainers Thursday, urging Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) to give in to President Donald Trump’s demands on funding the border wall and end an ongoing partial government shutdown.
The 1970s icon took to Twitter — using her signature all-caps, heavy-on-the-emojis style — to call on Democratic leadership to end the “suffering” of federal workers (who actually have yet to miss a paycheck), like the real-life heroes that they are.

She went on to suggest that Democrats should be the first to cave on shutdown demands, because the benefits of ending the stalemate outweigh the cost of the wall. Cher urged Nancy not to “die on this hill.”
“HELL B HERO… HE’LL EAT UR LUNCH & STEAL UR LUNCH YOU’LL B FKD 6 WAYS 2 SUNDAY.DONT DIE ON THIS HILL. HE STOPS AT NOTHING,” Cher tweeted.
In fairness to Cher, her advice isn’t bad, although Democrats are concerned about the “morality” of the border wall, and have made the issue of a permanent structure separating the United States and Mexico a sticking point, preventing any deal being reached between the White and Congress. But the ask is a mere $5 billion in a multi-trillion-dollar budget, and while Republicans might have issues with the cost, Democrats are rarely concerned with increased government spending.
It’s not clear, though, whether Pelosi will be hailed as a hero for ending the shutdown. Democratic legislators appear to be fine with the ongoing stalemate, and public opinion seems to be shifting the blame toward President Trump with time (though only slightly, and the same audience polled expressed support for the border wall).
Thursday morning, both Pelosi and her partner-in-crime Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) urged Republicans to cross benches and vote with Democrats on a bill that would avoid funding the border wall, but Republican leadership resisted, noting that the White House will not authorize any spending bill that does not contain at least $5 billion in spending for the border wall.
Cher didn’t let Trump escape criticism, though. She added her own thoughts about the president’s fitness for the job in a pair of follow-up tweets that are heavy on capital letters but light on fact-checking.

“Venetian blinds” on the southern border probably would not work as well as the proposed wall, however.
