Check Out How Easily Wrenches Break Locks

All locks have weak points, but before using a common household lock to secure your valuables, you may want to click on the video above.

In the clip, the MrGear Youtube channel shows a man demonstrating how easy it is to break into some traditional locks with just two wrenches. It’s worth noting that these devices seem to have bodies of hardened composite rather than metal, which makes them more vulnerable to this kind of attack.

The most popular Youtube channel dealing with lock breaking is BosnianBill aka LockTube, which boasts over 55 million views. Its description reads: “Your Lock Lab for exploring different ways to overcome security devices, with a focus on locks. The techniques we’ll look at include both non-destructive (picking, bypassing, etc.) as well as a few destructive methods. Our objective is to have a little fun while gaining a rapid entry. We’ll also look at how different devices work, identify their design weaknesses, exploit them, and generally break a lot of shit.”

Its host, Bill Johnson, is an expert locksmith who loves to show the many ways in which locks can be compromised; he’s especially brutal on the Master Lock which he thinks is a total piece of junk.

In the clip below, which has almost 3 million views, Johnson shows how the incredibly popular Master Lock can be picked with something as simple as a zip-tie …

Johnson told the NYPost that the problem is that the guts of many Master locks are the same.

“They have a wide variety of locks with different styles of bodies and shackles, but all have the identical junky core,” he said.

The former Army officer, who served 28 years on a bomb disposal team, calls up lock manufacturers to point out weaknesses in their products — and many of the smaller companies actually listen and improve their locks, he says.

“Master Lock, not so much,” said Johnson, 56, who hails from Fairfax County, Virginia.

“You get what you pay for,” he warned, conceding that some of the company’s higher-end locks work well.

With almost 205,000 subscribers to his channel, Johnson seems quite content to keep showing the deficiencies in the products that promise security in hopes that companies will improve their goods and provide customers with sound theft deterrents.
