“Middle-class white folks” and “working class whites” are “culturally under assault,” said Pat Buchanan on Saturday, speaking with left-wing CNN’s Michael Smerconish on the anchor’s eponymous show.
Speaking about an article he published last Thursday, Buchanan headline “The Great White Hope” described Donald Trump as appealing to the aforementioned whites as he said President Barack Obama appeals to blacks.
“Are the good times really over?” was being answered in the affirmative by disillusioned white voters, aid Buchanan.
Pointing to Trump’s record-breaking volume of total votes in the Republican presidential nomination process, Buchanan said the majority of the increase was driven by the whites he identified.
“Nationalism and populism,” aid Buchanan, were primary drivers of Trump’s base of white supporters.
“Are you helping or hurting [Trump] when you cast his campaign in those terms?” asked Smerconish about the racial element of Buchanan’s analysis, a question not asked of Democrat appeals to racial, ethnic, gender, and other identity politics.
“But isn’t Donald Trump stirring that base by pointing in the direction of the others, and laying off the blame on them for what’s going on among this core constituency?” asked Smerconish.
Building a wall along the America-Mexico for border security, said Buchanan, was not “anti-Mexican” but an attempt to “preserve the character and laws of the United States” which he said “are under assault.”
Adding “40 or 50 million” new immigrants to the United States since 1965, in addition to millions of illegal immigrants, said Buchanan, depresses wages by increasing the supply of labor. “Real wages have been stagnant for American workers and American families of the working and middle class” since 1974, added Buchanan, lamenting the outsourcing of manufacturing operations.
“Are demographics not destiny?” asked Smerconish, wondering is Buchanan’s analysis – if correct – meant doom for the GOP’s future.
The Republican Party is under a demographic death sentence,” said Buchanan. “Even if you get, say, 60 to 65 percent of the white vote – which Nixon got and Reagan got, both of them winning 49-state landslides – when the white vote diminishes, it’s not about 72 percent of the electorate – 63 percent of the population – as it goes down further and further, you’re gonna have to get Hispanic votes, you’re going to have get some more African-American votes, and you gotta get more Asian-American votes, or quite frankly the Republican Party’s gonna go the way of the Whigs,” concluded Buchanan.
