President Donald Trump announced on Monday night that he is signing an executive order to temporarily suspend immigration into the United States as the world continues to grapple with the coronavirus pandemic that originated in China.

Trump tweeted, “In light of the attack from the Invisible Enemy, as well as the need to protect the jobs of our GREAT American Citizens, I will be signing an Executive Order to temporarily suspend immigration into the United States!”

Trump’s move is supported by the overwhelming majority of the country, according to a recent independent poll.

“A total of 83%, or 5 in 6 people, say they favor a moratorium on immigration through the southwest border amid the pandemic, a new Harvard/Harris poll found,” The Washington Examiner reported. “That figure includes 75% of Mexican Americans and 93% of Republican voters.”

The news comes as the coronavirus pandemic has started to hit Latin America harder in recent weeks.

The worst hit countries in Latin America are:

  • Brazil; 40,000+ cases with 2,500+ deaths
  • Portugal; 20,800+ cases with 700+ deaths
  • Peru; 16,000+ cases with 440+ deaths
  • Chile; 10,500+ cases with 100+ deaths
  • Ecuador; 10,000+ cases with 500+ deaths
  • Mexico; 8,500+ cases with 700+ deaths
  • Panama; 4,500+ cases with 100+ deaths
  • Colombia; 3,900+ cases with 150+ deaths
  • Argentina; 3,000+ cases with 140+ deaths

The numbers being reported by countries in Latin America are likely significantly lower than the outbreaks that they are currently experiencing due to poor infrastructure and limited resources.

On Sunday, Trump said during a White House Coronavirus Task Force press briefing that the United States would help Mexico and other nations that need ventilators to fight the pandemic.

“And we’re going to fill up the reserves of states, we’re going to work with them so in case this happens again,” Trump said. “But we’re also going to help other countries. I was telling you, the president of Mexico, we’re going to be sending a pretty large quantity to Mexico. They very much need them and to other countries where they need them. I’ve had about six calls with leaders of other countries and they need them.”

Trump made similar remarks on Saturday while speaking about the coronavirus situation in Mexico.

“And now we’re the king of ventilators,” Trump said. “We have ventilators, we’re going to be helping other countries very soon. We are going to be helping Mexico. I spoke with the president of Mexico, he’s great, a great guy, and I told him we’re going to be helping him. They desperately in Mexico need ventilators and I told him we’re going to be helping him very substantially. We’re in a position to do that. We’re building now thousands a week and they’re coming in rapidly, and they’re very, very high quality.”

On the issue of ventilators, Trump hammered the Democrat Party and the media on Monday in a series of tweets for spreading panic last month.

“Last month all you heard from the Radical Left, Do Nothing Democrats was, ‘Ventilators, Ventilators, Ventilators.’ They screamed it loud & clear, & thought they had us cold, even though it was the State’s task,” Trump tweeted. “But everyone got their V’s, with many to spare. Now they scream ‘Testing, Testing, Testing,’ again playing a very dangerous political game. States, not the Federal Government, should be doing the Testing – But we will work with the Governors and get it done. This is easy compared to the fast production of thousands of complex Ventilators!”
