On Wednesday, President Donald Trump announced that Veterans Affairs Secretary David Shulkin was out and that he was being replaced by White House physician Dr. Ronny Jackson.
Trump tweeted: “I am pleased to announce that I intend to nominate highly respected Admiral Ronny L. Jackson, MD, as the new Secretary of Veterans Affairs. In the interim, Hon. Robert Wilkie of DOD will serve as Acting Secretary. I am thankful for Dr. David Shulkin’s service to our country and to our GREAT VETERANS!”
Jackson began his active duty naval service in 1995 at Naval Medical Center Portsmouth. He later became the honor graduate of the Navy’s Undersea Medical Officer Program in Groton, Connecticut. After completing his residency at Portsmouth Naval Medical Center in 2004, in 2005 he joined the 2nd Marine Logistics Group, Combat Logistics Regiment 25, in Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. From there he deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom as the emergency medicine physician in charge of resuscitative medicine for a forward deployed Surgical Shock Trauma Platoon in Taqaddum, Iraq.
Jackson was selected as White House physician in 2006, while he was still in Iraq. He has served as White House physician for George W. Bush, Barack Obama, and Donald Trump.
