U.S. President Donald Trump speaks during a news conference with members of his administration in the Rose Garden of the White House in Washington, D.C., U.S., on Friday, May 29, 2020. Trump said the U.S. will terminate its relationship with the World Health Organization, which he has accused of being under Chinese control and failing to provide accurate information about the spread of coronavirus.

Update: Alyssa Farah, White House director of communications, said reports about the deployment were “false.”

“False: off the record – title 10 not under discussion,” said Farah in an email response to the AP, which ignored her request that the statement be “off the record.”

The Department of Defense instructed the Army late on Friday to ready its Military Police Corps to respond to the continued rioting in Minneapolis after Democrat officials at the state and local levels repeatedly failed to secure the city.

“Trump made the request on a phone call from the Oval Office on Thursday night that included [Defense Secretary Mark] Esper, National Security Advisor Robert O’ Brien and several others. The president asked Esper for rapid deployment options if the Minneapolis protests continued to spiral out of control,” The Associated Press reported, citing senior administration sources. “The person said the military units would be deployed under the Insurrection Act of 1807, which was last used in 1992 during the riots in Los Angeles that followed the Rodney King trial.”

The move by the president comes after Minnesota Democrat Governor Tim Walz and Minneapolis Democrat Mayor Jacob Frey failed to take the actions needed to quell the violent riots which have endangered countless lives and already caused well into the tens of millions of dollars worth of property damage.

Soldiers at two bases — Fort Bragg in North Carolina and Fort Drum in New York — have been told to be ready to be deployed with the next few hours and soldiers at two other bases — Fort Carson in Colorado and Fort Riley in Kansas— have been told to be ready to deploy within the next 24 hours.

In Minneapolis, residents pleaded for help as the city continued to descend into chaos, with one resident, Ryan Griffin, writing on Twitter, “My neighborhood, burning. Median income $33k. Many have no transit. Our pharmacies, banks, gas stations, restaurants are destroyed. The six closest grocery stores are looted. Our post office is on fire. The nearest gas station is on fire. No response from our city or state.”

ProPublica reporter Alec MacGillis noted that a staffer for Minnesota Democrat Attorney General Keith Ellison was apparently “pleading for help in Minneapolis” as the city was overrun by violent rioters.

Washington Post reporter Holly Bailey, who was on the ground in Minneapolis, wrote: “Driving around Minneapolis tonight, it is shocking how few law enforcement you see. Seen cops on bikes patrolling downtown, but no sign of National Guard troops or other police. Strategy seems unchanged from the last few nights. Chaos erupts, with little attempt to stop it.”
