We spent the past month and half pouring over tributes to Tom Brady’s career, remembering him as the greatest quarterback to ever play the game.

It turns out that it was a little premature.

40 days after he announced his retirement from football, Tom Brady announced his intention to play a 23rd season on Sunday, letting the football world know that he’ll be returning to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

“These past two months I’ve realized my place is still on the field and not in the stands,” Brady posted to Twitter on Sunday. “That time will come. But it’s not now. I love my teammates, and I love my supportive family. They make it all possible. I’m coming back for my 23rd season in Tampa. Unfinished business LFG.”

On February 1, Brady officially announced his retirement from football — days after rumors swirled that he was hanging up his helmet — saying that he was “not going to make that competitive commitment anymore.”

“I have always believed the sport of football is an ‘all-in’ proposition – if a 100% competitive commitment isn’t there, you won’t succeed and success is what I love so much about our game,” Brady wrote in an Instagram post. “There is a physical, mental, and emotional challenge EVERY single day that has allowed me to maximize my highest potential. And I have tried my very best these past 22 years. There are no shortcuts to success on the field or in life.”

“This is difficult for me to write, but here it goes: I am not going to make that competitive commitment anymore,” Brady continued. “I have loved my NFL career, and now it is time to focus my time and energy on other things that require my attention.”

Even after Brady announced his retirement, Tampa Bay Buccaneers general manager Jason Licht appeared to leave the door open for a return.

“Right now we’re trying to make our plans to move forward, if that’s the case … We’re still in that process right now,” Licht said on “Good Morning Football.” “We’ll see what the future holds. Let’s just say we’ll leave the light on. We always leave the light on for a guy like Tom Brady.”

Brady was drafted by the New England Patriots with the 199th pick of the 2000 NFL Draft, and took over as the starting quarterback during the 2001 season after an injury to Drew Bledsoe. He would go on to lead New England to the organization’s first championship, and win five more Super Bowls with the Patriots in his 20 seasons under head coach Bill Belichick.

He left New England following the 2019 season, and won his seventh Super Bowl in his first season in Tampa Bay.
