Late on Friday, FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe was fired from his role just hours before he was eligible to receive a government pension after Attorney General Jeff Sessions rejected an appeal that would have allowed McCabe to retire this weekend.
In a statement, Sessions indicated that McCabe had lacked candor under oath on multiple occasions, saying “The F.B.I. expects every employee to adhere to the highest standards of honesty, integrity, and accountability. I have terminated the employment of Andrew McCabe effective immediately.”
McCabe instantly claimed that the decision to fire him was a deliberate act by the Trump administration to “undermine the special counsel’s investigation in which he is a potential witness,” The New York Times reported.
In an interview following his firing, McCabe said, “The idea that I was dishonest is just wrong. … This is part of an effort to discredit me as a witness.”
