On Tuesday, Fox News reported that Missouri Gov. Eric Greitens is expected to resign because of a sexual misconduct scandal and allegations of misuse of a charity donor list. Greitens had stated he would not quit the governorship in the face of the allegations against him.
Greitens was indicted in February on a felony invasion-of-privacy charge after a man whose wife admitted she had an extramarital affair with Greitens in March 2015 alleged that Greitens took a photo of her when she was partially nude without her permission. The woman also alleged that Greitens threatened to release photos of her if she told anyone about the affair, according to KMOV-TV.
Although the felony invasion-of-privacy charge was later dropped, the St. Louis Circuit Attorney’s Office said it would pursue the case, either through a special prosecutor or an appointed assistant.
In early May, Greitens’ former campaign manager, Daniel Laub, told the Missouri attorney general’s office that Greitens knowingly lied to the state ethics commission about how he obtained a donor list belonging to a veterans charity. Laub stated that Greitens’ political advisors tricked him into assuming responsibility for the issue.
The Kansas City Star reported, “According to a transcript of his deposition released Wednesday, Laub testified that everything about the explanation Greitens provided in the consent decree and campaign disclosure filing was a lie. Laub said that he didn’t give the campaign the list, that the campaign didn’t receive it on March 1 and that while his name was on the consent decree, he wasn’t the one who wrote it there.”
