At least three injuries have been confirmed in a potential explosion or mass shooting at a New York City subway station Tuesday morning, according to local officials.
The incident occurred at approximately 8:30 a.m. at the 36th Street station.
A number of images of bloodied people have flooded social media following the event. The details are still being confirmed by law enforcement, with the New York Police Department (NYPD) bomb squad investigating.
“A New York City Fire Department spokesperson told BuzzFeed News they received a call about smoke in the station and that first responders discovered multiple people shot,” BuzzFeed reported.
“Several undetonated devices at same location,” the spokesperson said, describing the scene as still active.

NBC New York reported “several undetonated devices found” and noted that “multiple people were shot.”

The New York Times reported that five people were shot according to a law enforcement official.
“Preliminary reports indicated that five people were shot, a law enforcement official said. The police were seeking a man with a gas mask and an orange construction vest, the official said,” according to The Times.
NYPD spokeswoman confirmed to Fox News Digital a “shooting” during peak commuting hours.
The area of 36th Street and 4th Avenue in Brooklyn has become the focus of the investigation area.
As of 9:42 a.m. local time, 13 people were confirmed injured at New York-area hospitals. The Associated Press reported at least five people had been shot.
“Fire personnel responding to reports of smoke at the 36th Street station in the Sunset Park neighborhood found multiple people shot and undetonated devices, a New York City Fire Department spokesperson said. The fire department said 13 people were injured, but there were no details on what those injuries entailed,” the AP stated.
New York Democratic Gov. Kathy Hochul also released a brief statement regarding the scene.
“I have been briefed on this developing situation in Brooklyn. First responders are on the scene and we will work with @MTA & @NYPDnews to provide updates as the investigation continues,” Hochul tweeted.

A later update from the NYPD noted “there are NO active explosive devices at this time” and asked witnesses to contact its tip line for more information.
