Law enforcement officials in Big Wells, Texas are investigating the scene of a car accident where a vehicle full of illegal immigrants crashed on Sunday after being chased by U.S. officials.

Local news affiliates reported that the vehicle was traveling at speeds of over 100 mph when the driver, who is believed to be a U.S. citizen, lost control of the vehicle, which was carrying 14 people. News 4 San Antonio reports:

A border patrol agent observed three vehicles traveling one behind the other on FM 2664 and suspected a smuggling attempt was happening, the agency said in a statement. The agent was able to stop one of the vehicles and called out a description of the other two. A second border patrol agent was able to pull over the second vehicle but the third refused to stop. The agency said multiple arrests were made in both vehicles.

News 4 San Antonio further noted that 12 people were ejected from the vehicle, an action which resulted in at least four deaths. Five people were reportedly taken to San Antonio Military Medical Center while four others were taken to local area hospitals.

News 4 San Antonio reporter David Caltabiano told The Daily Wire that, according to Dimmit County Sheriffs Office, a fifth person has died from the accident.
