Biden Campaign Taps Robert De Niro To Rant Against Trump Outside NY Trial: US Govt ‘Will Perish’

Actor Robert De Niro railed against former president Donald Trump and his supporters during a Biden campaign event outside a New York courthouse on Tuesday.

After largely ignoring Trump’s ongoing hush-money trial in New York, President Joe Biden’s campaign held an event outside the courthouse as the trial is set to go to closing arguments. The Biden campaign invited De Niro, a vocal critic of the former president, to speak. De Niro denounced Trump and claimed the American system of government is at stake in the 2024 election.

“Under Trump, this kind of government will perish from the Earth. I don’t mean to scare you. No, no, wait, maybe I do mean to scare you. If Trump returns to the White House, you can kiss these freedoms goodbye that we all take for granted,” De Niro said, “And elections? Forget about them. That’s over, that’s done. If he gets in, I can tell you right now, he will never leave. He will never leave. You know that. He will never leave.”

“That’s why I’ve joined the Biden-Harris campaign, because the only way to preserve our freedoms and hold on to our humanity is to vote for Joe Biden for president,” De Niro said. “Really – we don’t have a choice.”

Trump campaign officials characterized the event as an act of desperation by the Biden campaign,

“What you just heard from is a desperate and failing and pathetic campaign who knows that they are losing. Joe Biden’s sending his campaign outside of this criminal courthouse is a full-blown concession that this trial is a witch hunt that comes from the top, comes from Joe Biden,” Trump campaign press secretary Karoline Leavitt said in remarks immediately following De Niro’s press conference.

Trump campaign adviser Jason Miller pointed to reporting that Democrats have grown concerned about Biden’s low poll numbers. A Democratic operative in touch with the White House explained Democrats’ feelings to Politico.

“You don’t want to be that guy who is on the record saying we’re doomed, or the campaign’s bad or Biden’s making mistakes. Nobody wants to be that guy,” the operative said. But Biden’s poll numbers “are creating the freakout” among the Democratic establishment.

“This isn’t, ‘Oh my God, Mitt Romney might become president.’ It’s ‘Oh my God, the democracy might end,’” the operative said.
