While most winners at the BET Awards Monday night avoided the topic of politics, rapper and singer Doechii, real name Jaylah Hickmon, criticized President Trump for making moves to restore order following violent anti-ICE riots in Los Angeles.
“As much as I am honored by this award, I do want to address what’s happening right now outside of the building,” the 26-year-old Florida native said during her acceptance speech. “There are ruthless attacks that are creating fear and chaos in our communities in the name of law and order. Trump is using military forces to stop a protest.”
“I want y’all to consider what kind of government it appears to be when every time we exercise our democratic right to protest, the military is deployed against us. What type of government is that?” Hickmon continued.
“People are being swept up and torn from their families,” she said. “I feel it’s my responsibility as an artist to use this moment to speak up for all oppressed people, for black people, for Latino people, for trans people, for the people in Gaza.”
“We all deserve to live in hope and not in fear,” Hickmon concluded as several audience members gave her a standing ovation. “And I hope we stand together, my brothers and my sisters, against hate, and we protest against it.”

On Monday night, President Trump mobilized an additional 2,000 National Guard troops to Los Angeles to join the 2,000 Guardsmen deployed by the Trump administration over the weekend, along with 700 Marines that were sent on Monday, as The Daily Wire previously reported.
The protesters, including many waving Mexican flags, have also blocked traffic on roads and highways.
Trump wrote on Truth Social that he had directed his administration to take all necessary steps to end the “Migrant riots” and continue the deportations of illegal immigrants.
“A once great American City, Los Angeles, has been invaded and occupied by Illegal Aliens and Criminals. Now violent, insurrectionist mobs are swarming and attacking our Federal Agents to try and stop our deportation operations — But these lawless riots only strengthen our resolve,” Trump posted on Truth Social.
“I am directing Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, and Attorney General Pam Bondi, in coordination with all other relevant Departments and Agencies, to take all such action necessary to liberate Los Angeles from the Migrant Invasion, and put an end to these Migrant riots,” Trump added. “Order will be restored, the Illegals will be expelled, and Los Angeles will be set free. Thank you for your attention to this matter!”
