<p>The resistance committee said hundreds of civilians have been killed by the attacks, and residents who spoke to Reuters said they had dug bunkers into their homes and neighborhoods for protection.</p>
<p>The activist group said the city is losing 30 people on average daily to violence, hunger, and disease.</p>

<p>The U.S. Food and Drug Administration confirmed on Friday that toxic cough syrups linked to children&#8217;s deaths in India had not been shipped to the United States.</p>
<p>The World Health Organization has said India has a &#8220;regulatory gap&#8221; in screening locally sold syrup medicines.</p>
<p>The U.S. FDA said it was aware of news reports of devastating, ongoing diethylene glycol and ethylene glycol contamination in children&#8217;s cough and cold medicine in India.</p>
<p>Indian authorities advised the public to avoid two more brands of cough syrup on Wednesday following the deaths of 17 children under age five, linked to a toxic ingredient.</p>

<p>The children died in India over the past month after consuming cough medicine containing toxic diethylene glycol in quantities nearly 500 times the permissible limit, officials said. The deaths were all linked to the Coldrif medicine brand, which was banned after a test confirmed the presence of the chemical on October 2.</p>
<p>India&#8217;s health authority, the Central Drugs Standard Control Organization, informed the U.S. regulator that these products were not exported from India to any other country, the FDA said.</p>
<p>The FDA also said it remains vigilant to prevent contaminated drugs from entering the U.S. and asked manufacturers to ensure that drugs marketed in the U.S. are safe and of the highest quality.</p>

Cough Syrups Linked To Child Deaths Not Shipped To U.S., FDA Makes Clear

<p>President Donald Trump unveiled a deal with U.K.-based drugmaker AstraZeneca on Friday under which the company will sell some medicines at a discount to the government&#8217;s Medicaid health plan in exchange for tariff relief, similar to a drug pricing pact reached last week with Pfizer.</p>
<p>The deals set a framework the White House will use to try to reach its goal of lowering U.S. prescription medicine prices. The president sent letters to 17 leading drugmakers in July telling them to slash prices. Pfizer and Astra are the first two companies to reach a deal with the administration.</p>
<p>AstraZeneca will also offer some of its drugs at up to 80% off their list price through the TrumpRx website planned for next year, CEO Pascal Soriot said at an event in the Oval Office.</p>
<p>He said the company will receive a three-year tariff exemption &#8220;to localize the remainder of our products.&#8221;</p>
<p>U.S. patients currently pay by far the most for prescription medicines, often nearly three times more than in other developed nations, and Trump has been pressuring drugmakers to lower their prices to what patients pay elsewhere or face stiff tariffs.</p>
<p>Last month, Trump threatened 100% tariffs, ratcheting up pressure on the pharmaceutical industry to agree to price cuts and shift manufacturing to the U.S., after negotiations broke down earlier this year, lobbyists and executives told Reuters following the Pfizer deal.</p>
<p>More than 70 million people are covered by Medicaid, the state and federal government program for low-income people. Drug spending in that program is dwarfed by that of Medicare, which covers people aged 65 and older or those with disabilities and is not included in Friday&#8217;s announcement.</p>

<p>Medicare&#8217;s drug spending reached $216 billion in 2021, while Medicaid&#8217;s gross spending was around $80 billion.</p>
<p>The Medicaid program already receives the lowest drug prices in the U.S., so the additional savings may be modest, said Craig Garthwaite, a professor at Northwestern University&#8217;s Kellogg School of Management.</p>
<p>&#8220;If you look at AstraZeneca&#8217;s portfolio, I don&#8217;t think there are a bunch of drugs that exist where that&#8217;s going to involve them giving a very big discount to Medicaid,&#8221; Garthwaite said.</p>
<p>AstraZeneca&#8217;s Pfizer‑like deal may spare it tariffs, but will not move the needle on U.S. rising health insurance premiums and out‑of‑pocket drug costs, said Rena Conti, an associate professor at Boston University.</p>
<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s good for the companies, and has very uncertain if any benefit for Americans struggling with the affordability of prescription drugs,&#8221; Conti said.</p>
<p>Soriot has worked to keep his company close to Washington while pursuing its growth strategy.</p>
<p>AstraZeneca in July announced it will invest $50 billion in U.S. manufacturing and research and development by 2030. It will build its biggest site worldwide in Virginia, and expand facilities in five other U.S. states.</p>
<p>In September, the company announced it will sell its diabetes and asthma drugs direct to cash-paying U.S. patients at a discount of up to 70% off list prices, another move in response to Trump&#8217;s pressure campaign.</p>
<p>Soriot this year has played up the company&#8217;s U.S. credentials. He described the Anglo-Swedish firm as a &#8220;very American company,&#8221; highlighting its identity shift toward its largest market. AstraZeneca will list its shares in the United States as well as its current markets in the UK and Europe.</p>

Trump Announces U.S. Drug Pricing Deal With AstraZeneca

<p>Large parts of Kyiv were plunged into darkness in the early hours of Friday after Russian drones and missiles struck Ukrainian energy facilities, cutting power and water to homes and halting a key metro link across the Dnipro river.</p>
<p>In the latest mass attack targeting the energy system as winter approaches, electricity was interrupted in nine regions and over a million households and businesses were temporarily without power across the country.</p>
<p>In southeastern Ukraine, a seven-year-old was killed when his home was hit and at least 20 people were injured. In Kyiv, an apartment block in the city centre was damaged by a projectile, while on the left bank of the Dnipro that divides the capital, crowds waited at bus stops with the metro out of action and people filled water bottles at distribution points.</p>
<p>&#8220;We didn&#8217;t sleep at all,&#8221; said Liuba, a pensioner, as she collected water. &#8220;From 2:30 a.m. there was so much noise. By 3:30 we had no electricity, no gas, no water. Nothing.&#8221;</p>
<p>According to Ukraine&#8217;s energy ministry, over 800,000 customers temporarily lost power in Kyiv.</p>
<p>Ukrainians are bracing for a tough winter, as the full-scale war nears its fourth anniversary. Russia has intensified attacks on the energy system in recent weeks, striking power plants and gas production facilities, and local authorities are struggling with the scale of repairs required.</p>
<p>&#8220;They can&#8217;t demonstrate anything real on the battlefield&#8230; so they will attack our energy sector,&#8221; President Volodymyr Zelensky told reporters in Kyiv.</p>
<p>Calling for more support from allies, he said that Ukraine&#8217;s 203 main energy facilities needed air-defence protection.</p>
<p>Energy Minister Svitlana Hrynchuk met G7 ambassadors and representatives from some of Ukraine&#8217;s biggest energy companies to discuss how allies could help protect the country against further attacks and repair the damage.</p>
<p>&#8220;The blow is strong, but it is definitely not fatal,&#8221; Zelensky told reporters in Kyiv.</p>
<p>Ukraine&#8217;s air force said it had downed 405 of 465 drones and 15 of 32 missiles in this attack. Ukraine&#8217;s stretched air defences are no match for regular barrages on such a scale.</p>
<p>According to Zelensky, Russia deliberately waited for bad weather to attack, and the inclement conditions reduced the efficiency of Ukraine&#8217;s air defences by between 20% and 30%.</p>
<p>Russia said its overnight strikes were in response to Ukraine&#8217;s attacks on Russian civilian facilities.</p>
<p>Ukraine regularly launches drone strikes against Russia&#8217;s military and oil installations, although they are generally on a far smaller scale. Kyiv says it wants to force Moscow, which started the war, to negotiate a peace deal in good faith.</p>
<p>For many Kyiv residents, the day started with power cuts, disruptions in the water supply and transport delays</p>
<p>Over 250,000 consumers in the capital were still disconnected from the grid late on Friday, according to authorities.</p>
<p>&#8220;We had no power or water when I left my house. I can&#8217;t get to work because subway is not operating and buses are overflowing,&#8221; Anatoliy, a 23-year-old student, told Reuters.</p>
<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m hoping for the best but I don&#8217;t even know how to reach the other bank (of the Dnipro),&#8221; he said, after spending the night in his hallway because of loud explosions.</p>

<p>Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko said the assault was among the heaviest concentrated strikes on energy infrastructure and reported significant damage.</p>
<p>Her deputy, Oleksiy Kuleba, said two million customers in Kyiv temporarily faced problems with water supplies.</p>
<p>Ukrainian private energy firm DTEK said its thermal power plants had suffered significant damage but did not immediately provide further details.</p>
<p>Hrynchuk said it was three years to the day since Russia launched its first large-scale attack on Ukraine&#8217;s power grid.</p>
<p>&#8220;Today, Russia continues to use cold and darkness as instruments of terror,&#8221; she said on Facebook.</p>

Thousands In Kyiv Plunged Into Darkness After Mass Russian Attack

<p>A Los Angeles jury ordered Johnson &amp; Johnson to pay $966 million to the family of a woman who died from mesothelioma, finding the company liable in the latest trial alleging its talc products cause cancer.</p>
<p>The family of Mae Moore, a California resident who died at age 88 in 2021, sued the company the same year, claiming J&amp;J&#8217;s talc baby powder products contained asbestos fibers that caused her rare cancer. The jury late on Monday ordered J&amp;J to pay $16 million in compensatory damages and $950 million in punitive damages, according to court filings.</p>
<p>The verdict could be reduced on appeal as the U.S. Supreme Court has found that punitive damages should generally be no more than nine times compensatory damages.</p>
<p>Erik Haas, Johnson &amp; Johnson&#8217;s worldwide vice president of litigation, said in a statement that the company plans to immediately appeal, calling the verdict &#8220;egregious and unconstitutional.&#8221;</p>
<p>&#8220;The plaintiff lawyers in this Moore case based their arguments on ‘junk science’ that never should have been presented to the jury,&#8221; Haas said.</p>
<p>The company has said its products are safe, do not contain asbestos, and do not cause cancer. J&amp;J stopped selling talc-based baby powder in the U.S. in 2020, switching to a cornstarch product. Mesothelioma has been linked to asbestos exposure.</p>
<p>Trey Branham, one of the attorneys representing Moore&#8217;s family, said after the verdict that his team is “hopeful that Johnson &amp; Johnson will finally accept responsibility for these senseless deaths.”</p>
<p>J&amp;J is facing lawsuits from more than 67,000 plaintiffs who say they were diagnosed with cancer after using baby powder and other talc products, according to court filings. The number of lawsuits alleging talc caused mesothelioma is a small subset of these cases, with the vast majority involving ovarian cancer claims.</p>

<p>Lawsuits alleging talc caused mesothelioma were not part of the last bankruptcy proposal. The company has previously settled some of those claims but has not struck a nationwide settlement, so many lawsuits over mesothelioma have proceeded to trial in state courts in recent months.</p>
<p>In the past year, J&amp;J has been hit with several substantial verdicts in mesothelioma cases, but Monday&#8217;s is among the largest. The company has won some of the mesothelioma trials, including last week in South Carolina, where a jury found J&amp;J not liable.</p>
<p>The company has been successful in reducing some of the awards on appeal, including in one Oregon case where a state judge granted J&amp;J&#8217;s motion to throw out a $260 million verdict and hold a new trial.</p>

Johnson & Johnson Ordered To Pay Staggering Sum In Talc Cancer Case

<p>Former NFL quarterback and current Fox Sports analyst Mark Sanchez was charged with battery after a fight in downtown Indianapolis that left him hospitalized with stab wounds on Saturday shortly after midnight, police and the TV network said.</p>
<p>Indianapolis police charged Sanchez, 38, with battery with injury, unlawful entry of a motor vehicle and public intoxication, all misdemeanors. Sanchez is still in the hospital and was not booked in the county jail, police said in a statement, adding that final decisions on charges will be made by the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office.</p>
<p>The prosecutor’s office did not immediately return a request for comment.</p>
<p>An earlier statement from Indianapolis police said two men were in a “physical disturbance” in downtown Indianapolis around 12:30 a.m., with one receiving stab wounds and the other cuts. A statement from Fox Sports said Sanchez was in stable condition in the hospital.</p>

<p>Sanchez played 10 seasons in the NFL, starting with the New York Jets for five years before short stints with several other franchises. He has not played in the National Football League since 2018.</p>
<p>He was slated to cover the Sunday game between the Indianapolis Colts and the Las Vegas Raiders, according to Fox Sports. “We are deeply grateful to the medical team for their exceptional care and support,” the network said in a statement posted on X.</p>
<p>“Sending our thoughts and love to Mark Sanchez and his family. Hoping for a speedy recovery, 6,” said the Jets, referencing his jersey number.</p>
