Twitter is crying foul over elites having rules for the masses that don’t apply to themselves.

The situation came to a head again when the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced their plan not to mandate proof of vaccination (with or without a booster) in order to attend this year’s in person Oscars ceremony. Instead, attendees will need to provide a negative PCR test or a negative rapid antigen test on the day of the event, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

This year’s Oscars will take place at Dolby Theatre on March 27 like it has in the past. This is also different from last year’s event, which was held at Los Angeles’ Union Station and had strict COVID testing requirements. This was prior to COVID vaccines being free and widely available, the publication reported.

The article notes that The Academy requires their employees to be vaccinated with rare medical exemptions.

Meanwhile, other major award shows are still holding firm to vaccination requirements for attendees. The SAG Awards will take place on February 27 and according to their COVID-19 protocol page, “All ticketed attendees will be required to show proof of vaccination plus booster shot (if eligible), proof of negative lab-based COVID-19 PCR test within 48 hours of event, and negative antigen (rapid) test the day of the event.”

Critics Choice Association COO Joey Berlin said of the Critics Choice Awards on March 13, “We will be 100 percent vaccinated and require a negative PCR test within 48 hours of the event. I can’t invite people to a show where they’re not going to feel safe.”

Twitter users showed up in force with strong opinions on this turn of events.

“And the Oscar for Hypocrisy goes to…,” Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) commented while retweeting the article.

“I bet it will be for ‘the help.’” Cernovich said in response to the “COVID-19 Vaccination Will Not Be Required for In-Person Attendees” headline.

“SURPRISE: Elites Think They’re Special And Don’t Need A COVID Vaccine Mandate,” another Twitter user shared.

The event was already facing criticism for once again nominating obscure, serious films and skipping over blockbuster movies for yet another year. Comedian and late night host Jimmy Kimmel shared his thoughts on the phenomenon, saying, “How did [‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’] not get one of the 10 nominations for best picture?”

“Forget the fact that the movie made $750 million and is still going. This was a great movie. It wasn’t in the top 10 best movies of the year? There were three Spider-Men in it. You’re telling me ‘Don’t Look Up’ was better than ‘Spider-Man?’ It most certainly was not,” Kimmel continued.

“Even if you go by the critics reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, ‘Don’t Look Up’ got a 46% and ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ has 90%. For God’s sake, ‘Jackass Forever’ has an 89%. “Why do best picture nominees have to be serious? When did that become a prerequisite for getting nominated for an Academy Award?”

The comedian expressed what so many others have said before about the Oscars and how snooty they are.

“You wanna know what happened? Voters looked at the list and saw the names Leonardo DiCaprio and Meryl Streep and they checked the box and then they put their kids in the car and went to see the movie ‘Spider-Man.’ And they loved it! But they didn’t vote for it.”
