Despite getting mixed reviews from both fans and critics, “And Just Like That,” the reboot of the popular HBO series “Sex and the City,” is definitely getting a second season, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
“I am delighted and excited to tell more stories about these vibrant, bold characters — played by these powerful, amazing actors,” showrunner Michael Patrick King shared in a statement. “The fact is, we’re all thrilled. And Just like That… our Sex life is back.”
HBO Max head of original content Sarah Aubrey agreed. She said: “We have been delighted by the cultural conversation generated by these characters and their stories, set in a world we already know and love so much. We are proud of the work Michael Patrick King and our wonderful writers, producers, cast and crew have done to bring these stories to the screen. We can’t wait for fans to see what’s in store for season two.”
HBO Max also revealed that the show “delivered the strongest debut of any HBO Max Original Series to date.”
The first season saw the reunion of Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker), Miranda Hobbes (Cynthia Nixon), and Charlotte York (Kristin Davis), plus many of the secondary characters from the original series, which aired from 1998 to 2004. Actress Kim Cattrall, who played Samantha Jones, was notably absent from the ensemble after some rumors of drama between her and Parker.
“And Just Like That” showed a new side of the leading ladies as they were in their 50s, not their 30s anymore. Carrie’s husband Big dies of a heart attack after a vigorous Peloton ride in the first episode, leaving her a widow and eventually navigating dating in the city once again.
Series creators also placed a huge emphasis on injecting modern issues into the narrative and intentionally adding a more diverse cast of characters to counterbalance the three white leading ladies. Sara Ramirez plays Che Diaz, a non-binary comedian and podcaster. Miranda begins an extramarital affair with Che, a storyline that many fans hated because it felt so out of character for her. The same was said of Miranda’s choice to leave her comfortable job to become a civil rights activist.
Hobbes defended Miranda’s decision to make huge, questionable changes in her life. “I feel like what Miranda does [on And Just Like That…] is incredibly brave,” the actress said during a recent interview with Vogue.
“She gives up her very lucrative corporate job and goes back to try and make something more of her life. As Miranda says: We’re not old, we’re 55. I mean, you’re certainly closer to the end than to the beginning. But if you’re not happy with where you are, you still have a lot of time to make a change.”
