A new analysis explained that most women who procure abortions have already given birth.
On Tuesday, The New York Times summarized data from the Guttmacher Institute and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to determine “who may be most affected if Roe v. Wade is diminished or overturned by the Supreme Court.”
According to the analysis, roughly 60% of women who procure abortions already have children and many justify their decision by stating that they want to be a better parent to their children who have already been born. Meanwhile, 43% of abortions occur within the first six weeks of gestation — meaning that nearly half of preborn babies are in no way protected by Texas’ heartbeat act or Mississippi’s 15-week abortion ban, which is the subject of the pending Supreme Court case Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization.
The analysis adds that 56% of abortions occur via surgery, while 44% occur via abortion pills and similar methods. The latter category is growing in popularity — and the Food and Drug Administration is presently weighing regulatory changes that would allow doctors to more easily prescribe the lethal pills.
In terms of marital status, 46% of mothers who procure abortions have never been married; 31% are cohabitating, 9% are divorced, and 14% were previously married. In terms of age, 29% of women are between 25 and 29 years old, 28% are between 20 and 24, while 9% are teenagers. In terms of income, 51% — a slight majority — are above the poverty line.
68% of women who have abortions live in states won by President Joe Biden in the 2020 election cycle — meaning that 32% live in states won by President Donald Trump. In any case, blue states are witnessing more steep declines in abortion than red states.
The plurality of women who procure abortions — 41% — have attended some postsecondary education. Twenty-three percent have graduated college, while 27% have finished high school and 9% do not have a high school diploma.
In an interview with The Daily Wire, Brett Baggett — a pastor at Ekklesia Muskogee in Oklahoma and the president of Rescue Those, a ministry that equips Christians to advocate for preborn babies — explained that facts presented in the analysis “help us understand the true nature behind abortion.”
With respect to mothers killing their babies to further their career ambitions, Baggett commented that abortion “is not primarily an act done by those with no way out of a hard situation.”
“Rather, just like the Israelites in Leviticus 20 who were tempted to offer up their children to Molech in order to be blessed by this false god, women today who murder their children sacrifice them upon the altar of career or convenience in order to bless the false god of self,” Baggett said.
Baggett noted a similar phenomenon with respect to mothers who account for their abortions by pointing to their other children.
“This line of thinking seems to only exist to ease the conscience of the one who wants to kill their child and not feel guilt over it,” he explained. “The truth is that people in their God-given conscience know that murder is wrong, but they suppress that truth in unrighteousness, and therefore ‘Claiming to be wise, they became fools’ (Romans 1:22). And when fools who think they are wise speak, they say things like ‘murdering my children’s brother or sister is loving towards my children.’”
