Katy Perry proved it’s difficult getting around on land while dressed as a mermaid when she fell out of her chair and flat on her back while donning a costume of the Disney character, Ariel.
During Sunday’s “American Idol” live program, the 37-year-old singer was sitting between the other judges on the set, Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie. The three were preparing for the show to start, reported Page Six. In a video clip, host Ryan Seacrest is leading into a segment when his lower jaw suddenly drops, and viewers can hear a loud thud and commotion erupt off camera.
“Oh!” Seacrest explained without telling the audience what had just happened.

The director then cuts to a shot of the judges, where Bryan is laughing hysterically, and Richie is standing up to help Perry, who has apparently just fallen out of her chair because all we can see is the top of her mermaid tail.
The next shot shows the “Dark Horse” hitmaker on her back in her chair, struggling to get up.
“Are you ok? Are you alright? She’s alright,” Richie announced.
Richie, Bryan, and Seacrest then all work together to get Perry back upright and place her back into her chair.
The entire time the singer is smiling and waving in the mermaid costume.
Once back up in her chair, the audience started chanting the singer’s name, “Perry,” over and over again.
“Hell with mermaid!” Bryan exclaimed.
“I love it!” Richie replied.
The Roar hitmaker appeared to recover from her fall and even had a little fun with the situation on Instagram later.
“Flippin’ your fins you don’t get too far,” Perry wrote, an apparent reference to a line in the song “Part of Your World” from the animated Disney film “The Little Mermaid.”
“Swipe to see what almost accidentally killed @lionelrichie,” she added, along with a clip of the fall.
This is not the first time the superstar singer has had a wardrobe mishap on the hit reality competition series.
In 2018, the singer posted a clip on Twitter that showed Perry splitting her pants during the taping of the show.

“I have good news and bad news today – : I won’t be able to live stream #AmericanIdol today but: I CAN promise you some pants splitting fun,” Perry tweeted to her 100 million followers at the time.
We see her cracking up in the video before she announces, “Oh, I just split my pants.” The singer then gets up off the chair, turns her back to the camera, and flashes her wardrobe malfunction to the audience.
