Move over, J.K. Rowling. Another rumored TERF is getting attention today.

Grammy award-winning singer Adele got slammed online for admitting that she loves being a woman at the Brit Awards while accepting the “Artist of the Year” prize, a new award that was created by merging the previous Best Male and Best Female Artist awards, Page Six reported

This was especially noteworthy as the Brit Awards made headlines late last year for intentionally eliminating categories separated by gender and merging them into a single, gender neutral award.

“I understand why the name of this award has changed but I really love being a woman and being a female artist. I do!” Adele said as the crowd cheered. “I’m really proud of us, I really, really am.”

The “Rolling in the Deep” singer got a lot of vocal support from the Brit Awards audience, but LGBT activists on social media weren’t as happy about the singer’s comments.

“Please, no, ADELE can’t be a TERF,” performer Jacob, whose bio includes the descriptor “staunch feminist,” shared with his thousands of Twitter followers.

“Who’d have thought Adele was a transphobe and would use her platform to call for the destruction of the trans community. Especially the confused teenagers,” another Twitter user lamented.

Others said they “lost a lot of respect for Adele” and would no longer “spend a cent on her music,” The Times of London reported.

But not everyone was annoyed at Adele. Some fans reacted by rolling their eyes at the backlash, saying it indicated a frightening trend.

Author Jane Symons stuck up for the Grammy winner.

“A decade ago, if someone had said a woman would [be criticized] for the thought-crime of saying she liked being a woman, I would have laughed at such a ludicrous suggestion. Now it is happening,” she wrote on Twitter. “I don’t know whether to cry or scream. Congratulations #Adele, and thank you.”

In a Spectator op-ed, Debbie Hayton shared her thoughts on the situation. She also compared Adele to the much-maligned Rowling and indicated that canceling these women was not a good direction to head in.

“The temptation to apologize for apparent wrong-think might be huge. But her gender police critics are unlikely to be satisfied by apologies, so it’s vital she stands firm: Adele’s message to women and girls was inspirational,” Hayton, who is a teacher, wrote in the piece. “Here was a woman – who has sold tens of millions of albums – telling the world she was proud to be a woman. That’s something to celebrate, not condemn.”

Adele was already facing criticism after canceling her Vegas residency at the last minute in January, only to re-emerge from hiding at her boyfriend Rich Paul’s house a few weeks later and say she was attending and performing at the Brit Awards. The artist showed up with a diamond ring on her finger, which has also sparked engagement rumors.
