Last week was Thanksgiving, and for the first time in American history, politicians and public health officials were urging (and in some cases ordering) people to forego travel and abstain from observing the holiday. Nevertheless, judging from the heavy airline traffic and clogged highways, lots of people ignored the moratorium and gathered with family and friends to give thanks anyway.
Thanksgiving is a favorite holiday for many (myself included), because it is the one holiday that remains on the civic calendar that has a purely Godward focus, unencumbered by bunnies or elves or other fictional characters. Its sole point is the giving of thanks to God.
