Pope Francis may project an image of the gentle reformer, but a Vatican cardinal claims that behind the scenes he is a cunning politician cut straight from the pages of Machiavelli's "The Prince."
According to the mostly progressive German publication Der Spiegel (which, until now, has been very much pro-Pope Francis), the Curia under Pope Francis has become increasingly divided following Archbishop Vigano's bombshell letter accusing the Roman Pontiff of lifting sanctions on the abusive Cardinal McCarrick that were put in place by his predecessor, Pope Benedict.
The tensions have only worsened due to Pope Francis' persistent silence. After speaking with a cardinal on the condition of anonymity, Der Spiegel reports that Pope Francis has increasingly abused his office in the pursuit of power and shows no signs of stopping, which completely contradicts his calls for mercy.
"He preaches mercy, but in reality he is an ice-cold, cunning Machiavellian, and, what is worse – he lies," said the Cardinal.
Part of the problem, according to Der Spiegel, is the Pope's sluggishness in dealing with the sex abuse crisis and the homosexual network. For example, his conference on the abuse crisis has been scheduled five months from now in February 2019. On top of that, Der Spiegel notes that Pope Francis has been a hypocrite with money as he rails against global capitalism.
"He has been railing against global capitalism for years, but, like his predecessors, he took in millions from Cardinal McCarrick," reports the outlet. "The pope praises the value of the traditional family, but surrounds himself with counselors and workers who display the opposite — in more or less open concubinage with representatives of one sex or the other."
