President Trump really hates CNN. For good reason. The liberal news network seems intent on slamming the Republican president at every turn — and completely ignores the steady stream of accomplishments Trump is piling up (see: Economy, Booming).
CNN had another bad week, blowing another major story. So blinded by the possibility of catching Trump holding a smoking gun, the Clinton News Network simply forgot to check to see if the story was, uh, true.
On Friday, CNN’s Manu Raju and Jeremy Herb hyped a "major" story, an "exclusive" (forget that The Washington Post had already reported it). They'd found evidence that Trump’s campaign was given advanced notice about documents stolen from the Democrats.
CNN claimed that Donald Trump Jr. had been sent an email on September 4, 2016, from a person named Michael J. Erickson that included a link to WikiLeaks documents and a decryption key to access the purportedly stolen emails.
But the date was wrong — and the date was the whole story. Turns out the email was sent on September 14. See, WikiLeaks dumped a trove of documents on September 13, so someone sending Trump Jr. an email on the 14th — the day after the dump — means that someone was simply alerting him to the fact that there were documents out there.
In short, the documents were already public. The story was a big nothingburger.
"Correction: This story has been corrected to say the date of the email was September 14, 2016, not September 4, 2016. The story also changed the headline and removed a tweet from Donald Trump Jr., who posted a message about WikiLeaks on September 4, 2016," CNN eventually wrote under a new (and really boring) headline that said: "Email pointed Trump campaign to WikiLeaks documents."
Trump, of course, didn't miss the opportunity to rub CNN's nose in the mess it had made on the carpet, posting on Twitter on Saturday:
In a speech on Friday night in Florida, Trump hammered the press, saying he would "cut straight through the fake news media. We're going to speak the plain truth. And really the truth you want to hear."
"CNN apologized just a little while ago. They apologized!" Trump yelled. Someone in the audience shouted, "CNN sucks!"
"Oh thank you CNN, thank you so much," Trump said with a smile. "You should have been apologizing for the last two years!"
